!969 Z in MC magazine
« on: October 03, 2016, 01:30:36 PM »
There is a 69 in one of the magazines with no console, no tach, and no gauges. It is an 05, X33, Norwood car. It does not have a center fuel gauge, the fuel gauge is where the tach would be. Is 05 a time where no tach was required? I have seen an original like this but cannot remember the date. It also has D80 spoilers but not on the trim tag which seems late for that.

Shortly after requiring a tach or special instrumentation with Z/28, U16 went on hold. This is from a Zone letter to dealers dated February 11, 1969.

RPO U16 Tachometer has been delayed for an undetermined period of time; this also affects RPO Z/28 in that Z/28 orders specifying U16 cannot be submitted. Therefore, Z/28 orders being submitted must specify RPO U17 Special Instrumentation and RPO D55 Console options until such time as the U16 Tachometer option becomes available.

Chevrolet must have later backed off and allowed Z/28 orders to process without D55 & U17. I have seen a few May cars with out U17.

D80 eventually shows up on trim tags but the less said about exactly when, the better.
Learning more and more about less and less...

Makes sense,
I feel odd cars kind of lead to the thoughts of originality. I think most restorers of non doc cars add options for resale or to try to make them look like people think they should. My 12A L78 auto has the D55, tach, and no gauges. My 08E Z has no console, no gauges, but a tach and center fuel gauge which I see very few like.

I guess there were a lot of odd combinations back then. I've got an 05A build date with no tach, no console or gauges, but does have the custom comfortweave interior. Also has the D80 spoiler package but it's not listed on the tim tag.

Odd does interest me. My 69Z with no console, gauges, power steering. But it is an RS with custom interior. It is a documented Scuncio car. Do not know who ordered it but why get the bells and leave off the whistles?

I think it it is great that our cars are not cookie cutter examples. My X77 D80 Z is a later example so it has the Tach and center fuel gauge, no console. Was ordered with the ZL-2 hood, and Z23 wood and pedal trim. Other than tinted glass and a AM radio, thats it. If I saw a RS without many other options, I think it just lends itself to being original, instead of over restored.
Keep them original fellas, it is these quirky options/orders and the way they came that makes each car unique. :)

I suspect more than a lot of them were born that way, Especially the first few months of production, it's just that we never see them that way anymore because things get added over the years.   It wasn't until the later months of production when a lot of this stuff became standard (tach, spoilers, chrome exhaust tips etc..)

My Z is much like yours, an RS, with deluxe houndstooth, but a flat hood, no power steering, no spoilers, not even a rosewood wheel.  It's pretty much the way I remember most Z's back in the day.

And it was all about keeping the payments low.
RS/Z with a radio and posi. Not much else, so looks were also important to that purchaser.
