Yes, two differences being discussed.

I have seen both styles of bolts for the hinge to fender bolts.

Can you check the head markings on left and right fender to firewall bolts?  Are they from the same manufacturer?  If not, that might explain the difference.

Yes, will check head markings on fender to firewall bolts. I do know Jerry commented on my build thread that he also had the smaller captured washer 3/4" used on the hinge to fender.
Some interior pictures:

The type of screws used in the vent & U shaped rubber are the same on both sides.

Great catch David! As many know the back sides of those screws had a type of cap so it did not eventually cause issues with hoses.
Now for some more pictures! Gray tipped but flat style oil dip stick.

Ground wire from battery ground to radiator support. Note the size of the star washer!

Side Marker Bezel which used a thinner bezel in front fender compared to back bezel and bezels had black paint in groove from factory.

hmm, maybe I'm wrong, but thought I read/heard that 68 didn't have the caps on RS washer bottle screws ?

Note the in-line check valve on the RS vacuum line from tank, then the filter. Those check valves aren't reproduced as far as I know.  69 is, but it's different. BTW, I thought that line was routed in behind the fender. The filter and check valve would still be accessible prior to where the line disappears behind the fender.

Chick, do you recall or have pics of the handle on hood release ? I'm pretty certain (not sure) they were painted black so it wasn't so visible through the grill ?

Thanks for the pics. VERY NICE SURVIVOR !

Did you ever get a chance to compare the head markings in the fender to firewall bolts?

This is the pass side with the small diameter washer.

No I do not and need to check that Garth!

This bolt is identical to the one used on my car......there is a circle inside the recessed edge of the head and there are three slashes around the edge of the circle and the slashes only occupy one half of the circle.  Opposite the half with the slashes is an "S".

Hi Bryon...here are photos of the two different bolts used on the fender to firewall on my 1968 07C Z28.

#3857663 used to bolt the fender to the firewall...was also used to bolt the fender to the pillar.  I have a total of four bolts.
Photo of bolt head...

Photo of bolt profile.....

#3839741 used to bolt fender to top of cowl.....also used to bolt bottom of fender to bracket.  Have a total of four bolts.

Hope this helps.

Good job Jerry! The picture I currently have of the large captured washer fender screw to cowl which I believe might be the same manufacturer as yours is a lousy picture and need to try again.

Bryon, you mentioned you have noticed with the screw for the hinge to fender both what the AIM calls out, 1" captured washer, and the 3/4" captured washer type that was in this car and what seems to be the norm. I'm curious as to how often you have noticed the 1" captured washer screw being used in that hinge to fender and if noticed on 67, 68, & 69 year models, or possibly on a specific year? Thanks!

It's going to take a while but I will do some checking on the hinge to fender bolts. Most have the smaller washer, from what I remember.

I've painted a lot of GM cars over the years and on the original cars I've done I always find the small 3/4" capture washer in that location (hinge to fender) Whether it be Pontiac, Oldmobile, etc.. and the 3 chevy cars I have hear (chevelle, Camaro, Nova) are also that way, including my Z.  Not saying 1" capture washer wouldn't be correct but the cars I've found those on have already been apart at one time or another so I can't say it was born that way.
The problem with the 1" capture washer is that it limits hood adjustment (washer hits curvature of hinge before bolt runs out of slot adjustment)  So I somewhat question what the AIM is calling for, just based on what I've seen and the adjustment issue.

And that's true. If the washer is too big, there is no adjustment.

I can't say 100 percent that the ones with the larger washer were original (not sure if the ones I am thinking of were really 1 inch, but at least a little larger than the small washer version).

And that is why I asked as every survivor or what seemed like an untouched car has had the 3/4" captured washer in that location including our 68Z.
