A real local 1968 RS Z/28 survivor purchased from Ammon R. Smith and has been local owned (2 owner) its entire car life. I had told Byron I was going to get this posted by July so a little late but hopefully we can get this moved to our CRG Survivor Category as there are a lot of neat features/pictures and things to discuss on this late 07D built Z/28 like how it was parked and reason why.

Ouch, I committed a cardinal sin 😊 by spelling Bryon’s name incorrect. The most important word in each of our vocabulary is our name so sorry Bryon!
OK Bill, a little bit about why the car has low mileage and just sat for many years but first let me introduce the cars 2nd owner is my good friend Skip, the same person who owns that fantastic 69 Hugger Orange low mileage Z/28 Survivor you looked at while attending last years MCACN. This 68Z I looked at many times while restoring our 68Z but had to keep in mind being a late build there are differences.
OK the story! The original owner in 1974 who lived in a small local town named Red Lion travels hardly a mile to obtain a trade-in value with the town’s Chevrolet Dealership named Sterner Chevrolet. What they offered was a piddly unbelievable $300. The owner told them the Transmission was worth that much and they agreed but stated something to the effect, “Yes, but we can’t sell them.” The owner then parks that 68 RS Z/28 in his Mom’s garage behind the house in an ally way and eventually moves to NY. The car sits in that garage for years until Skip hears about it and eventually happens to be in the area on business when the Mom is opening the garage to take her car out. The rest as they say is History but Skip told me it was covered with dust to the point you could hardly make out the stripes on the car, and two others had cracks at obtaining the car but turned it down. Survivors many years ago are not how Survivors are cherished and looked upon today, and heck we did not even call them Survivors.
Note on the car the last PA inspection sticker expired end of October, 1974.

I happened to have a old shipping box with the Sterner Chevrolet label.

I love 68's... especially RS's with the wide trim on the top of the doors, Rally green looks so perfect on it as well. Great car.

Now that is another example of where the bar should be set when attaching the term survivor. Not a hoopty,(still around, but poorly maintained) not a staged barn find. Rare indeed, and deserving the title.

Was a little over 39 thousand when purchased in 1989. Less than 42 thousand on it today. It is driven to local shows and enjoyed for sure.

Yes indeed! By the way he picked this one up on a Good Friday in 1989 and I was with him when we picked up the 69 Hugger Orange Z/28 gem on guess what, yep, Good Friday!

Hmph, 89 was a good year, I took possession when I dc'd from the Air Force. March 21st. Does it still retain 100% of it's original paint? Looking back, my biggest mistake with the Z( I guess my Father's also) was "over loving it" in the form of waxing. On the body creases, in certain areas, paint had literally been rubbed off. And a power buffer was never used on it. Overall, the car was lighter then the Ash Gold would have presented from the factory. Your buddy's Z's are very impressive. He needs a 67 to complete the trilogy!

Yes, its a paint survivor but close up it has some flaws here and there along with a thin area on a front header panel white stripe but I love this car and as James stated, the RS with the outside trim makes one awesome car and one of my favorite first gen Camaro's. Now for some pics as we await getting this moved to the survivor area.
Antenna on this late 07D 68 Camaro.



If we restored a first gen cowl like this some might say it was not correct as the fade paint line is higher than what we normally note.



Note the RS chalked on the Valance Panel. Please note the back side is painted body color but the center area is black.


On the other side there seems to be something 8. Possible sequence # or 68 since 69's are starting soon??
