Group 2 Transmission Code Missing?
« on: August 02, 2016, 10:36:44 PM »
I am considering buying a Norwood RS/SS 67 Convertible with 396, owner states it has NOM engine with TH400 Trans (moved from Column to floor)  Group 2 Z code for the TH400 trans (3 speed) is missing?   Is that possible?   or did this have a different transmission originally?

Can that engine be with any other transmission? Cowel Tag says:

765-Z

D  2R  3L

4 N

Thanks for your help!

Steve

Yes, the TH400 without a console can have a column mounted shifter.
This convertible has a rear speaker (2R)?

Per the seller, there are no speakers.   I am not sure how they would get it in regardless.  Are these tags sometimes inaccurate or is this an non original tag?

Would the TH400 require a Z denotation in Group 2?  So if its not there - it was not originally a TH400?  would be the 2 speed column shift?

Thanks,

Steve

That is strange. A TH400 code is 2Z for NOR (2M for LOS). I would think there should be some transmission code (2M,L,Z,or B) to follow when a 4N code exists. You can try comparing the VIN to see if it falls within the 03D period that's stamped on the tag. Also, compared the VIN tag on the door jamb with the hidden VIN that may be visible looking through the cowl grill to make sure they are the same.  Is there a factory clock in this car? Can you get a closer view of the tag so the 2R (?) is more clear?

You can look for other signs on the car, check this link if you haven't already.

Did you check for a partial VIN on the TH400?

What is the rear axle code?

If I remember correctly, the 2Z wasn't always used. Especially if it was a column shift. One of the other CRG guys will have to chime in to verify this. However, it should definitely have the rear speaker.

That would make sense, Ed, especially since the trim tag does look real.
Steve, As for the rear speaker, is there a wire running to the back well area by chance?

Yes - it looks like around that time there was not always a code for the TH400.

That's why I would check for a partial VIN in the transmission to see if it's original.

If there is one. I'm still looking for the partial VIN on my TH400. I heard not all TH400's got the stamp. This is for my LA car. Then again I never had it out of the car so I'm limited as to where to look.

Check around the bottom of the transmission, above the pan on the edge.

This is from a 1969 Chevelle, but will give you the general idea of the area to look.

My 67 02E Norwood car has a console TH400 and no Z in the Group 2 location.

Left or right, front or back?
Thanks,
Mike

I don't know if there is consistency.  I would check the drivers side, on the back half roughly.  If not there, try the other side.

But it does have the 2G for console, correct?

Mike, BC, LVN,

Thank you all for your input.  You are a wealth of knowledge!  Trying to get to the bottom of what it is or was to evaluate.  Appears to be otherwise good shape - a little trunk rust in wheel well and had a repaired right side crash (some frame and fender).

Seller owned it for 2 years and has little documentation and purchased from Oregon shop
Last part of hidden vin appears to match door so appears to match.
There is no 2G so likely was column that was moved to floor.  Not sure if that requires trans change..
Unknown if speaker wire exists

Thanks again,

Steve

My 69 400 vin is on the drivers side. Although you can see it with my exaust pipes you cannot get a picture of it. DMV told me I either had to pull the pipes or the heater box to get a title in NC. Nice guys.

If you have the assembly instruction manual, see UPC U80 for the wire routing for the single rear speaker.  It would go down the passenger side under the rocker panel gutter cover.  Depending on what's been done to the car, you might even find remnants of the cardboard speaker housing or fasteners.

And an old thread from the TC site that describes the speaker housing location:
http://www.camaros.net/forums/31-convertibles/53423-rear-speakers.html

Here's a thread that shows 69s with two rear speakers, but should give you and idea what to look for
