Based on our small sampling, 1.5% were designated special paint.

In addition to stripe delete and non-rpo paint color there was non-standard stripe color. Three Z/28s are known; one of them does not have - - paint code but is noted on the w/s.

Do you know the car because you can't tell from the trim tag. What was the stripe color?

Thanks for the info. William what colors were the non standard stripes?

Stripes were generally black or white based on a chart in the ordering info. Some combinations changed with a vinyl top or convertible; some did not. Fathom Green always had white stripes. Rallye Green had white stripes with no vinyl; black stripes with a black vinyl top.

The chart was either revised later or had errors. It shows black as the default stripe color for Le Mans Blue; in production striping was white unless the car had a black top. Burgundy is shown with red striping with or without black top; a few early production cars were built that way including one Z/28. Later Burgundy cars always had white striping.  Also, I believe there is a black car or two built with red D90 striping.

Known non-standard Z/28 striping, all on non-vinyl top cars: Hugger Orange/Black, Le Mans Blue/Black, Cortez Silver/White. I am aware of a Daytona Yellow/Parchment Z/28 with white stripes; wasn't built that way.

This raises another question: How was stripe color determined on special color Z/28s?

I thought if the tag was coded for special paint, that meant "see instructions".

I can't say I really can swear to knowing this car , but I will. Why? I have owned the car since 79 in its original paint. KurtS. said that was probably the reason, after viewing the car's pictures, for the special paint since nothing else is out of place or unusual. Car is Black top white stripe FROM this site 71  LeMans Blue      Copy/paste in bold and notation is in header of table : W(4)With no V.top white stripe ,  B= w/black top-black stripe, W =Ivory top-white stripe  http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#ExteriorColors
My car (-B) Ordered 71 with black top and white stripe. This car has been submitted for this same topic a couple of years ago when the question arose, and probably several other places on this site. Thanks.

Where was your car built? I too have a (- B) car that I have owned since 76. It was a LA  built car and the only reason I know it was a stripe delete car is it was printed on the build sheet I pulled of the top of the gas tank. I appreciate you sharing the info on your car.

William-"This raises another question: How was stripe color determined on special color Z/28s?"

My take is that GM assigned default stripe colors as a means to simplify or determined the suggested color. A special colored car would not have a default, therefore, I think the customer ordering would have had to make that choice also along with the color or in some cases have the stripe deleted (on any model package that stripes were part of a package). Obviously, from documented cars, the customer had a say to over ride the default. I would think some dealers would discourage this as it made more work on their part and what about cars that were ordered one way, but came off the truck different than ordered?

Built a week after mine at the same plant. Do you have the original wheels on your car? If so could you tell me if they have the  "AD" or "YH" stamping.

Thought red Z's came with Black Stripes unless a white vinyl top was ordered?

That's correct. This car was a special paint order [- -] because the original owner wanted Garnet Red with white striping.
