1968 Convertible Quarter Panel Questions
« on: July 25, 2016, 04:27:35 PM »
I've got a 68 L78 convertible that I've owned for the last 30 years. Before I got it, someone did the body and put patch panels on it with lots of filler. At the time I was 18 and didn't care. The car has been parked for the last 20 years.

But now I would like to get the car redone properly with full panels.
I do have a complete brand new NOS front clip (less hood) that I bought at GM over the years before it was all discontinued.

What's the best panels to get now? I've looked for NOS, but can only find coupes available.

From what I'm reading, AMD is the best manufacturer of sheet metal, but they only produce hardtop.
The convertible panel is the X-Line which is not made by them, so they are probably Goodmark or Dynacorn supplied.

I can get Goodmark panels through work, but I don't know how good the quality is on them.

All the posts I find about quality issues and the best panels are all years old, and everyone has different opinions.
Has anyone put these panels on a convertible, and if so, what was the fit like?

Would I be safe going with Goodmark over Dynacorn?

As a last resort, my only other option is to pick up a set of NOS coupe panels and cut the sails off.

Any advice appreciated

Thanks

67-68 convert quarters were already disco at GM when I did my '67 convert in 1980. We spliced GM coupe quarters on it and it looked fine. Sold it in '81; saw it a few weeks ago. Still looks great.

Many years ago there was a rough Deepwater Blue '68 Camaro SS L78 convert sitting in a parking lot across from the Milwaukee Mile. Original owner; still had the engine. Same car?

BTW if the original assembly line parts are not too rusty the body lines may be a good bit more crisp and may actually hold the lines better than the NOS parts

I use GM quarter's on my 68 convertible went on easy. Still look's great. Have heard to many bad things about repo panels. If it was mine I would use GM. Hope this helps!

You used GM convt 1/4's or GM coupe 1/4's which were cut?
