Anyone gutted a restoration battery?
« on: July 10, 2016, 02:05:47 PM »
My 3 or so years old restoration battery has given up and had read there might  be another battery inside the case? Anyone cut one open? Thought I might save the case.
Friend had one and wherever he bought his they told him if it was not on a tender constantly they would not warranty it. I got a good charge in  mine after it was acting up and it would hold a load which seems to be good for starting the car 3 times then it is dead and has lost its load capability. Of course the fourth time was when the car was in the trailer and I'm trying to unload it at the show

Thought about that today. Why not just keep a "good" battery in the car then bolt in the replica when it's time to show?

You trailer it, or is it a driver?

Bill I want you to carry that show battery in your lap while your driving around, so as soon as you park you can put it in have it all correct under the hood... ;D

This is the burgundy car I just finished. I have 3 miles on it and hated to drive 30 miles to the show and find it leaked something the whole way! So I hauled it and wouldn't start to unload. Then it wouldn't start to  load either. Load tester showed it drops to 6 volts after starting 3 times

Hi Bill,
I've had NOS batteries last maybe 3 years before failing. I have one dead R59 that's in the shed and was wondering along your lines about replacing the internals. I also have a new NOS R59 in the box with the wax plugs still installed I bought in the early 80's that I am holding on to, for what reason I can't figure out. But, I don't want to break the wax seals and add acid only to get a few years out of that. Then, I thought of hauling an empty R59 to a show and swapping it out with one that is used to drive the car but I worry about the eventual chipping or marring of the paint under the support bar bolt heads from swapping it. The R59 repro tops look like a great alternative except for the replacement sides not having the correct pattern.
  Decisions....decisions.....*sigh*  :-\
What I may wind up doing is this; bring a dead, empty R59 to a show and having more than one right side support bracket on hand to address the eventual bolt marring of the paint, swap out the battery. This would only be for a show I will be spending the whole day at.

I didn't realize I had the problem until I found this website site. Maybe we need a new forum for group help session?

Well whats the alternative ? hoarding baseball cards? collecting stamps? bird watching?

I am fine with cars (and motorcycles), being my vise.

I follow Giants baseball pretty close, but not glued to a TV to watch sports. I do follow eBay sales of cars, and try to keep my finger on the pulse of the market.

There are worse(or un-constructive) things to have as a hobby.
