Trans-Am axles Mis-stamped block
« on: July 15, 2006, 01:01:40 AM »
Are their any distinct ways of identifying the over the counter Trans am axles that were available for 12 bolt Camaros. My father used them in his 67 L78 S/S drag car back in day. I believe I put these in my 69 RS Z/28 back 20 some odd years ago.
Also The same 69 when I got the car had a 6618 block dated C 13 9 Stamped VO3189BN  I know this is not the correct stamping and  always felt it was just misstamped  although it didnt bother me much at the time.I have had the engine out for as many years that I have had the car. (since 80) Its a 302  from the windage tray to the 202 heads  Now I am finally getting back to putting It in oriiginal cond.
What I wonder is why the stamping has the 9. Its also worth noting the N looks to me was stamped by itself not in a holder? maybe angled ever so slightly. Its almost as if whoever stamped it tried to add another letter to make it look better I cant find a BN stamping for anything other than a 6cyl . The build date for the car is O3E  Vin# 124379N626190  Tag 12437NOR295590   X33  71 71 711 Any help would be appeciated

Today I heard the over the counter Trans Am 12 bolt axles had 1/2 in. studs and was heat treated differently (stronger). Still would like to get even more info.

I have 2 of the original Trans Am axles for the 67-69 Camaros.  The part number was 3927508.  These were purchased years ago.  They are for drum brake rear ends.  They did have 1/2 inch wheel studs (knurl diameter .6125, knurl length .24 (.32 to the stepdown by the threads) and the overall length stud length is 1.54 inches).  On the axles the diameter after the machined surface for the bearing 1.36 and the diameter by the machining for the splines 1.15.  The axles use c-clips. The overall length of the axle from the wheel surface to the c-clip end is 29 1/2 inches.  I have no idea on any differences with heat treating.   I don't have a stock axle to compare these axles to so I tried to list all the important dimensions.

I hope this supplies all the information needed.

Thanx for the info. I was beginning to think these axles were a myth.
My father and brother were the only people I could find who knew of them. Must have been a low selling item, popular to the Stock and Super Stock drag racers maybe.
The part number should be enough to get started I will post any info I can locate.
