Quain Stott's 67 Camaro... mildly modified & thrown together

Quain was at the Cars & Coffee he grabbed me and said come check out my 67 Camaro that I "threw together"
There was nothing thrown together about this job...

The engine is set back with a flip frontend which slides into place so there is no external indication of it.
Engine 577 CUI All aluminum big block with ac etc
Hand fabricated exhaust and fuel tank by Quain.
The roll cage doubles as the A pillars and is tucked inside the headliner and is tucked in behind the instrument panel as well
Recessed exhaust through the rear pan.
9" ford with 4 link coilovers














For those who do not know Quain... he is former PRo Mod World Champion and his parents own Stott Ford In Tryon NC. Quain builds race cars now just inside the NC border and runs the South Eastern Gassers series.

That is why he "grabbed" you to look it over...you know your stuff and appreciate all craftsmanship. Thanks for sharing. For an altered car, that thing is NICE! Great quality work, proportioned and sitting just right. Killer engine. NICE! 1 more time,lol, NICE!

Quain and I have been friends for years,  rarely does he show up at C&C, plus he got there late.
My brother's first 1973 Z28 was bought new at his parent's dealership (used to be Stott Chev now Stott Ford)...

I need to go up to his race car shop and get him to put it on the lift and take some more pictures... it really is trick.
He said, I couldn't find a fuel tank to fit after I tucked the exhaust so I just formed and tigged one up out of aluminum stock... just thrown together... lol
He tried the exhaust in aluminum at first then just went with the stainless... said he may do one in titanium.

Quain, his brother, and nephew all run cars in the Southeastern Gasser Series that Quain started ( they run to 1967 rule book no electronics period correct look and must run clutch shifted 3 or 4 speeds Pro tree first one to the line wins.)

This is the one I am trying to get him to restore... real 4N 4spd conv built in 67 in the midwest was traded to his father in late 69.  BLue plex hood scoop and lace paint... we think it may have been built at Harrells shop.

Very well crafted car. The roll cage looks like a thing of beauty the way it hugs the pillars, and really cool that tucks up above the headliner. That must have been some time getting it so tight to the body. I couldn't tell if the the headlights were functional or if it was easier to run the RS front end and do without all the extra headlights and trim. How did the front end slide past the tires, or did you notice how does it attach at the bottom?

The inner fenders are sectioned and in the photo here you can see the upper slide catch (just below the wiper grille to the far right edge of the photo) second photo shows the tubular slide and the amount of slide before it kicks up...  it only needs to slide a few inches before it tilts away.

 I thought I had taken more photos but I was obviously just looking at it in amazement, beautiful job TRICK as hell.

It uses a door latch mechanism which latches front and center,
If I remember correctly the headlamp doors are relay activated motors.

They will be at the big race weekend in Ohio Gear Jammer drags I believe. Worth the trip if they are within a few hours. 

I think they have 25+ cars running the series now.

Ive actually got about 600" of linear bearings off of a 300" wide Jagenberg Slitter section from the paper converting plant we owned. now... I need to get to the 40 Foot trailers we bought to store the rest of the stuff we didn't sell!!!

Quain welded some spring perches for my Dana 60 back in 1980 when he had a little shop in Naples, NC. He was also building his Vega then. Had that 60 in my Camaro back then and eventually reinstalled the 12 bolt. He's a good man.

He's in Columbus NC now...Quain is the most humble world champion I have ever met, salt of the earth, he is never too busy to talk about race cars or high po muscle cars.  Besides running the Southeastern Gassers series & building high end gassers for it- He has been working with Dina Parise doing chassis setups on her Pro Mod Cadillac

 He's originally from that area. He used to run at Greer when we were racing. He drove Butch Duggins' Vega some, the Carolina Wagon and others. He used to have a website when he was racing that had a lot of pictures of his old cars. I've been trying to track down his first Vega for him.  A friend of mine had it and sold it. I've lost contact with my friend since he moved away, but I still looking.

I go to Greer at least once a month on Thursday nights.

We have been looking for CT Cromer's  Candy Man 69 Hugger Orange Camaro which we believe to be a COPO it was sponsored by Jim Connell Chevrolet Anderson SC. 
CT owns Cromers Food Service and would like to restore the car or if that fails would like to build a clone of his old race car.

Also giving me ideas of a lift off/slide front clip for the blue car with the pillow blocks if/when the blue goes under the knife..  I really, really want to run in the lead spring shootout class..  LS, glide on a brake, twin 88's..  Ahhhhh maybe one day.

Yeah I used to go every Thursday back in the early '90's. Ran and '82 Indy Pace Car Z. Had more fun racing it than a fast car. Liked to cut a better light than the cars with a box. Someone on another site posted a picture a drag strip with the Candy Man it in it. I asked about it and whoever posted  didn't know anything about the car or where the picture was taken. I knew the car looked familiar so thanks for the post. I remember Butch Shirley from Anderson running at Greer. He may be able to help or maybe Gene Cromer may remember something about the car.
