Hey Steve, I can't comment on the stamp but shouldn't there be a pipe plug above the timing cover?

That's a dead giveaway, and the "3" looks odd

There have been a few 388 (Tonawanda) cast blocks, assembled in Flint for Z28 application(DZ). Not sure why or how this happened. I'm not comfortable with the stamping IMO.

Thought I read somewhere that some Tonawanda blocks were shipped to Flint for assembly due to a production crunch at Flint during the 69 production year, but I cannot confirm or recall where I read that.

Wow, cast the day before it was assembled? Would that normal for a DZ? There's a couple things I don't like about it, but I'm not a stamp expert so I'll leave it alone.

Sounds normal then. My 396 was cast 7/23 for an 7/28 build. I was actually thinking about my car build date when I originally posted which was 8/22. That's why I was so surprised at first. Thanks for the reply.

Not "normal" in all cases. And there are always exceptions to the rule.

My Z28 has the original 302 which was cast on 27 Aug 69 and assembled the next day!   Probably NOT normal, but these things did happen.  (I have a totally original '57 Chevy with 283 engine which the engine was assembled the SAME DAY as the block was cast (it must have been cast in the early morning hours and assembled much later that day, but seemed unbelievable to me when I purchased the car in 1978... :)

Would it be safe to say that any of the Tonawanda cast, Flint built 302's would NOT be built 1 day after casting?

Steve it looks as though the partial VIN sequence is 500270 but is it for a NOR or LOS car? Does the CRG have any evidence of Tonawanda blocks being machined and assembled at Flint early in the model year?

Cast and assembled the same day engines (from the same plant) exist. Unusual but yes they happened. Some blocks were also assembled weeks later.

I would think not. They would have to have been cast at Tonawanda, then loaded for transport, then transported from Tonawanda to Flint, then unloaded at Flint, then machined and assembled. All in less than 2 days.
