A few interesting statistics regarding US military veterans:

  • Approximately 13% of adult male americans are either serving currently, or are veterans
  • Among those, over half are over 60 yrs of age

The percentage will continue to decrease as time passes.

It's probably due to my age and my own history that I find it unfortunate for our country that as time goes on, fewer and fewer of our citizens and voters ever served their country as soldiers.  I grew up in a family and in a period when I 'expected' to serve in the military at some point (and I did).  I believe that military time, while short for most of us as a percentage of our lives, persists as the most significant period of our lives, and it gives us a unique perspective of our country and our roles in it.

I think it's unfortunate that as time moves forward, our country may never have another President, or Vice President who served in the military and yet those men make decisions about sending our sons and daughters into war!

I add my thanks to all who served, and all who will serve, and whose children will serve and I mourn those who gave their life to preserve our democracy.

It's really hard for me to be celebrating Memorial day. I have two sons in the Air-force. One is over in Iraq. Where in Iraq? I don't know, no one will tell me, and that scares the shit out of me. I just want this war over with.

Also this Memorial day, take a moment for remembrance those men and women who put on the uniform daily: police and fire.

Little know statistic, but on average there are between 100-110 LOD's in the fire service, yearly.

Remember all those that served, are serving, and those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

Prayers go out to the men and women overseas.

Memorial Day is the day to remember the ones that have served and lost their life for our freedoms.  Take a moment of silence for the price they paid and for the freedoms we have.
From the bottom of my soul.  THANK YOU.
