SBC Plug Wire Routing Pics
« on: May 24, 2016, 01:52:31 AM »
I'd like to detail my 69 small block with original style plug wire separators.  Does anybody have some pics stashed away from one of your projects?  I could use some pics of the engine out of the car with close ups of the routing and the type of separators used.

Thanks!

The 3 wire mickey mouse style clip is the most difficult to find, HBC was going to reproduce it... have they?

So, are there pics of the "Mickey Mouse" style clip? I have not ever seen one.

That's it... very hard to find until HBC remade them.

Ok it looks like page 92 in the AIM (6-B9). I can clearly see them in the picture and where they go.

http://www.gmpartswiki.com/getpage?pageid=102178

I have not seen these on a 69Z. Do these only apply for the 350, 327/307 cars?

(yes James HBC has them for sale)

The AIM says 'V8 engines'....  :)  apparently applies to all..  Go ahead and order us all a couple of them Austin... :)

ps.  Heartbeat info only references their use on the driver side, but the AIM reference posted shows one each on each side (driver and passenger side).. item 17.. pn 3702799 retainer.

Well I saw that, but looking at other unrestored cars I haven't seen them yet on a Z. I didn't see them on Skips orange Z either.

I am so anxious to purchase parts for everyone here, I just want to make sure we all need them first... ;D

I suspect most of those sorts of clips got broken, tossed or lost the first time the wires were rerouted or replaced...   Did your engine -when you purchased the car - have ALL of the other 'retainers' except for the 3-wire one Austin?

PS>  Go ahead an order them for all of us..  I'll be responsible if it turns out we don't really need them? :)  ie.  I'll accept the blame..  I think Heartbeat has some kind of discount (20% off) going thru today? :)

Would they really charge $9.75 to toss a couple of these into an envelope and mail them??  You could probably get 500 of them in the same envelope.. :)

The owner of my car switched the wires early on an saved the originals. I got all the original wires with my car, and all the original clips were present. So yes it came with all the original retainers except for the 3-wire. (Not that my car is the benchmark)
I have some original 69 pics from 1969 when guys bought their cars new, and I don't see it.

Maybe it was a early 69 SBC thing or late 68 carry over?

Sorry I don't have an open account with Heartbeat. Heartbeat and the "King" are in a different universe than my pocketbook. :o

When I bought the entire wire retainer kit from Heartbeat for my car, 2 of these mickey mouse clips were included.

The 3 wire retainers have been found throughout production.
Most restorers owners collectors had no idea they were used because they become brittle and the first time the plugs were replaced the clip was lost or broken, they have not been available for years.

I guess I'll use them since they came in the kit.  Looking at the AIM, illustrations aren't all that great but they seem to have an odd placement holding the front 3 wires right where the 4th wire comes in.  I would have thought (makes sense to me) they would grab all 4 at that point.

it almost appeared to me from the drawing that they were using those retainer to sorta 'cross' the 5 and 7  spark plug wires, to minimize cross firing..?  May be my imagination, but one could certain use them that way.. :)
