8 track tape holder 993579
« on: March 24, 2016, 08:34:18 PM »
Would this be painted interior color, like the console pad? Any pics of one of these installed?

Thanks!

Maybe, maybe not (but probably not). The 993579 was a dealer installed accessory and there were no rules governing how each dealer handled accessories. Some may have painted them interior color if the customer requested, while others may not have. It just depended on the dealer and what the customer was willing to pay for.

That makes sense thanks. I'll be painting mine to match the interior.

Thanks!

Note that these were also available "over the counter" from the Service department (for a whopping $5.90), so a lot of times the dealer never even saw them, so again, most would not be painted (unless they were painted by the owner).

Abbidle, would you please post a pic with the holder lid open? Thanks in advance.

Thanks Ed. So more likely they were not painted. Regardless, I'm painting mine anyway. Never too much red...

lakeholme - It doesn't open, its all one plastic piece. The tapes slide into the holder attached to the door. You could buy one or two so that tapes could be stowed on either door. I "needed" this so my wife wouldn't always get to choose the tape while I'm driving. Very critical!

So you're going to screw it through the door panel; Is it the original?

Yes its 3 screws to attach to the door panel. No its not an original door panel, but I would do it anyway since I'm installing an 8 track system and the kick panel speakers. I've restored the original AM radio and the correct 69 camaro 8 track player, reconed original kick panel speakers and the dash speaker and I have a set of NOS rears. If I purchased this car off the chevy lot in Nov 68, I would have had an 8 track player...I can't wait to slap that first tape in.

abiddle, nice to see another 8-track enthusiast! While my 8-track is not a factory or dealer option, it is vintage day 2!  Hooked up to a 4-channel amp, it sounds pretty good! I have been restoring my 8-tracks over the winter months, so they play well. :)

I believe they were separate options.   In that day/age, people used 8 tracks (or 4 tracks) the way we do the modern music players etc these days.   In my area, in 1969, there were few good FM stations (for music); most of the good stations for 'young music' were AM...  on nice nights, we listened to AM stations from Chicago, LA, New Orleans, etc where the best music was played...  :) ..  but the 8 track player could listen to his own..

Yes U57 stereo tape system and U63 AM radio were separate and combine able options. Add U73 if you wanted a rear antenna which could not be combined with FM radios nor rear spoilers.

kevinw do you have a radio also? I noticed your ipod. jvrestorations serviced and restored my original AM radio, and added an ipod wire from the back of the unit where you can't see it. I probably would never use it since the AM radio only plays out of the single dash speaker. We considered adding an ipod connection to the 8track since it could be hidden in the console and play from the 4 speakers, but the ipod could only play when a tape engaged in the 8track (how the 8track knows to steal the power from the AM radio). I could have done this with an empty tape, but I honestly just don't listen to an ipod anymore. I have a stock of 8 tracks ready for whenever he returns my player.

Where else on the internet will "AM radio", "Ipod" and "8-track" be found in the same sentence?! We're ground-breakers here on CRG!!

Does anyone have a template or location dimensions for the holes drilled into the console lid? I have several pics, so I can probably get pretty close just by placing the bracket.

And for the benefit of the group, here's a layout of the wires for an AM radio and 8track setup.

It's in the AIM (UPC U57, Sheet A3, View A)

Thanks Ed, I knew I had seen it somewhere. The AIM shows both holes 1.38 in, but I had convinced myself that every picture I have seen had the back hole smaller than the front, although I don't know for what purpose they would do that. It will be easier with both holes are the same size, maybe its just an optical illusion.

Thanks - Andy

Yeah, there wouldn't be any need to make one hole smaller than the other, but you're right. The rear hole DOES appear to be smaller.

Yes, I had a spare non working AM radio converted to AM/FM/IPOD by a guy in South Jersey.  Then I put a 4-channel amp under the dash, with inputs from the radio and 8-track.  The amp turns on with the radio.  But with the radio off, I just just hit a small switch next to the 8-track to turn on the amp (and 8-track), then insert a tape.  Works pretty well, just have to remember to turn off the amp before I shut off the car or else the battery drains :) No speaker in the dash, I have them in the kicks and on the rear seat (and subwoofer in the trunk).

I documented the build here: http://www.camaros.net/forums/31-convertibles/232097-convertible-custom-stereo-install.html

Oh and the most important part!  Found out my 37 amp alternator will NOT work with all this electronics :)  If I total up the stereo amps alone, it was around 44 amps, doh!  Had a local shop take my 37 amp alt and put 75 amp internals inside.  So stock looking, but not stock :)

How did you come up with 44 amps? That's not a realistic number. Put a meter on it and you'll find that it's way way under that 99% of the time.

I did the calc a while ago, but 75W amp, Powered Sub 75W, 25W radio, 4 speakers.  Who knows, I might have done the calc wrong, but the 37amp was not keeping up with the charge especially since engine RPMs are way low (I have overdrive) and I tend to crank up the volume withe the top down :)

I have a set on my 68. Though not correct, my car is a extremely late 68 and I said what the hell.  They are dealer installed anyway, and have been on my car the last 30 years.

That appears to be another means of ruining a good console lid, along with having a fat butt gal sit on it.. :)

And for the benefit of the group, here's a layout of the wires for an AM radio and 8track setup.

You are missing one wiring extension harness that fits between the speaker output wiring from the 8 track and the under dash speaker harness.  The 8 track wiring will not reach all the way up under the dash, it ends just forward of the shifter, so GM made up a short  18" or so long harness to extend it all the way up to the area above the radio where the dash harness ends.  I found this out when I went to install my console mounted 8 track (you don't need it if you have a dash mounted version.  I had to go to M&H wiring to get it,  it is M&H part number 35939 (equates to GM part number 6295249).

Thanks Mark, I see the part on M&H $44 (STEREO TAPE PLAYER & MULTIPLEX SPEAKER EXT.) No pic :( But I wonder if jvrestorations gave me extra length on the speaker wire, I think he built the harness. Since I went to the expense of redoing everything as original, I should probably just order it. And do you have a pic of the correct heat sink bracket?

Hey Steve that looks great. I also have the deluxe interior, does the molded armrest get in the way of inserting the tapes into the holder? Is that a repro 8track player pad? And did you choose to paint your 8track player to match your interior, I always thought these would remain black but I'm thinking now that I'm wrong? Yours is the third example I've seen with the 8track player painted, the other two were on ebay so I didn't give it much thought.

Thanks - Andy

It's the original pad and has always been dyed. My player was painted too. Most of the ones I find are minus the pad, but, you can clearly see a paint line from when they were dyed. My pad has never been separated from top, very hard to find.

The moulded arm rests do cover some of the tape holder, but I can still manage to insert tapes. Make sure the foam is still inside the holders, the rattle of the tapes will make you nutz.

Very nice stash 68L30, a vintage audiophile heaven.  ;D

Make sure the foam is still inside the holders, the rattle of the tapes will make you nutz.

The foam within the holder I bought is brittle and turning to dust as I touch it, going everywhere. I'll need to clean it all out and improvise.

Thanks - Andy

The auction only had one tape holder and the 3 pack of screws, no box though. I did get the instructions. I guess one is better than none.
