Your "twin" Camaro. Is it possible?
« on: February 23, 2016, 07:24:44 PM »
Is it possible to have a "twin" Camaro, meaning having the same serial number but one from the Los plant and one from the Norwood plant?  I know it would be different options but was wondering if any of you knew of your matching serial number Camaro from the other plant?  I would be curious to know what options were ordered on the other one.

If you're talking about VIN, no. One will have an "L" and one will have an "N". 124379N674xxx   124379L674xxx. If you are talking about the sequence number only, I'll have to leave that for someone else to answer.

I would consider Camaros with identical colors and options as twins. I wonder if even there are that many Pace Cars that are "twins"?

Both plants started their VIN sequence at the same point: '67 100001 '68 300001 '69 500001. NOR built far more cars than Van Nuys so up to the last car built at VN, there was a match at NOR.

As for twins in terms of build configuration there's no question that occurred even within the same plant. Most cars were built for dealer stock and there were guidelines from Chevrolet on what to keep in stock. Not only by configuration but paint/trim. Three colors made up 45% of '69 Camaro inventory on the dealer I have paperwork for: Fathom Green, Frost Green, Lemans Blue.

As far as Z11 twins go there are a few here and there with options that would make you say someone ordered it special that way. But the dealers must have liked 396's with auto trans with console gauges as well as 350's with 4 speed and console gauges. I see tons of these combinations at shows. Funny when shows stack these up in one area. Fun to find the subtle differences. Power vs. manual tops, wood steering wheels, radio options, power windows and A/C round out the list of common Z11 options. Never seen one with liquid tire chain, light monitoring, or trailer hitch. :)

The former Chevy dealer I hung out with back in the day would disagree with you. Z11s were dogs to get rid of primarily for two reasons: even a lightly equipped Z11 listed over $4,000 and many people found the paint/trim unappealing. $4,000 was a ton in those days.

A family member bought a new '69 in October and the dealer still had their Z11.

Absolutely. There are a few in our db. But as I stated the number sequencing for both plants started at the same point. Up to the last model year car built at VN there was an equivalent serial number at Norwood.

For '67 7N100001-7N165008/7L100001-7L165008
For '68 8N300001-8N349164/8L300001-8L349164
For '69 9N500001-9N531163/9L500001-9L531163

But, there were 4 model number prefixes: 12337, 12437, 12367, 12467.

That's what I remember. I recall thinking that I wouldn't be caught dead with that orange hounds tooth interior. Interesting how time has sort of changed that perception.

That was my thinking in posting it. Today nice Z11s sell for strong money at auction; an automatic L35 did $121,000 at Barrett-Jackson last year. Even 350s regularly do well.

There are two column-shift 350s on ebay. Fairly rare. Hope they stay column-shifted.

I love the 69 Pace cars of course.  I have seen only about a half dozen with the column shift, of which mine is one.  What is exclusive to mine only so far, is that all the other column shift pace cars I have seen, they had TH350 transmissions and 12-bolt rear ends.  Mine has a factory 2-speed powerglide and a 10 bolt rear.  It is beyond me who orders a nicely optioned pace car, then had to special order a powerglide and a 10-bolt, as the 3-speed TH350 and th 12-bolt should have been standard on the pace car.  I wonder if this was ordered this way, or did GM run out of these parts when mine was put together.  I have yet to find another pace car, column shift or floor shift, with an original powerglide and/or 10-bolt.   My only other claim to fame on my pace car is the factory shoulder belts.  Other than that, it's your typical small block pace car.
