Hurst blower motor cage ?

I have been fixing up the daily driver 67 Camaro and finally getting the heaters sorted, they were filed up with mouse food/nests and the flaps were stiff and there was no airflow so a complete job was needed.

Fenders off, boxes out, shop-vac used, then a dip in the disinfectant bath for a day or two and its all looking better.

One of the things I found was that the rodents had eaten the plastic fan cage so today I removed its remains and put in the used tin one I had in stock.

Closer inspection of the remains of the old one showed a part number and a Hurst logo.

Did Hurst make fan cages for GM back in the day ?  I am sure as I can be that this car has never been taken apart, all the sealer and nuts look totally undisturbed, the core was a Harrison that matched numbers with the car pretty well so I think this is original.

My 68 fan has the plastic cage and also has the "H".  The "H" is for the Harrison radiator division.

The Logo looks a lot like a Hurst logo, its quite small and probably where my mistake was made.

Negative. That's the Harrison Radiator Corp logo and it's not a shifter but a thermometer! (Go look at the HARRISON name on your radiator!!)

   Just a friendly reminder, if this is a one wire motor (it should be for '67) then don't put too much paint under the screw head areas on the blower housing otherwise there will not be a good electrical ground to the outer heater cover housing, which is then grounded to the chassis. Also for '67 the two heater cover housing to body bolts w/captive flat washers didn't have star washers as it did in the latter years to ensure a ground to the chassis. At least for April and May 67 that is. I found this out after installing and testing my heater motor and cover which have been repainted and found the paint interfered with having a good ground.
Test before you reinstall the fender so you don't have any surprises later.

Thanks for the reminder Mike. My 69 is a one wire and as you can see in the pictures I did a good job painting it... I'll have to make sure the screws are making good metal to metal contact.

I hear you Bentley. I got lucky with a lot of things. This is how mine sat for many years. How a branch didn't take my SS or the Z out is beyond me. We had plenty of field mice too.

I am glad this discussion went as big as it did, my cage was eaten and the logo was dirty and scuffed so that's why I thought it was Hurst.

Now I see the two logos side by side I can see the differences.

Thanks for the tip about the earthing, I had thought the one wire system was not ideal and was considering adding my own hidden earth anyway, now I definitely will.

 Those walnut shells were in the heater cover? I've seen acorns but never walnuts.
That rodent must have used the fan cage blades to pick its teeth.  ;D

When I bought the car from a guy in Sacramento I had it shipped over to me in England and it was in "as bought" running pulled out of a yard/barn condition, a friend picked it up and put it in a container and the next time it saw daylight was here in the UK.

The first thing I did was clean it and I removed a huge quantity of walnuts, probably two wheelbarrows full and they were all eaten, just the outer shells left.

Problem was the shop vac wouldn't suck them up so I had to remove them all by hand.

Then I removed the seats and got another half wheelbarrows worth out.

Next job was to work out why none of the side windows didn't go down, yup, walnuts, the doors and 1/4 panels were full.

When I decided to do the heaters I knew what I was going to find.

Strange thing is that I never found a single dead rodent, no little skeletons, no remains, nothing. just nests and nuts.

All told I pulled at least 4 wheelbarrows full out of the car (not heaped by the way, level). and my seat wadding was in the rockers and above the headliner.

Next job is to gut the interior, steam clean the floors and roof and replace everything soft.

Car itself drives like a dream though and although she a little smoky its reliable.

Wow Paul! Last thing I de-nutted was our dog. Seriously, I have had at least two cars that I found nut shells in. One was down in an engine lifter valley!
I also repaired a van that had its undercarriage wires(fuel pump & ABS) bit in two by squirrels while stored for just a couple of weeks at their dad's house. I am thinking  on your car that this is more the work of chipmunks. Man, that was a lot of shells! Should have saved them to strip the paint off the body?

Thing is there was no damage to wiring anywhere.  I checked it all out after I found the major rodent evidence but its all as it left Norwood.

there has not even been much human interference in the wiring which is even better !

ps.   (We call it neutering down here in Bama).. :)

Paul:   Why would you expect to find dead/skeletonized rodents??  They were living HIGH on all those walnuts inside your car.. :) ...  We would say 'high on the hog' so that farm folks would know what we meant! :)
