Different air filter assy for A/C or no A/C
« on: January 29, 2016, 10:44:44 PM »
I'm restoring my LM1 Camaro. The car is A/C equipped and I'm trying to fit an air filter, but the snorkle is touching the A/C piping.

My question is: is there a different snorkle for A/C equipped car vs non-A/C equipped car ?

Here's a picture, with the snorkle interfering with the A/C

Can you show a pic of the whole air cleaner?
The snorkel looks too rearward.

Unfortunately, I don't have any other picture of it....my mechanics is about 120 miles from my home right now.

He just says on the phone, that the air filter assy is exactly the same for both, with or without A/C, except the angle of the snorkel is slightly different, pointing toward a slightly different direction.....

Anyone here is or was aware of this difference ?

Need a pic of the heat stove tube - should be offset to move the Therm A/C intersection to the front. I suspect it has a straight (non-original) tube on it, clocking the air cleaner too far back. No way the snorkel should point at the heater valve unless the heater valve is mounted incorrectly, too -

Check the length of the snorkel, too - should be about 14" to the best of my recollection.

Regards,
Steve

Thank you Steve for your reply. I'll pass you message to my mechanic.

BTW here's a picture of another LM-1 engine (survivor) I've found on internet, and it's not interfering at all.....

AT the beginning, I bought two of those air assy. My mechanic had one completely restored, but when  he finally realized there was a difference between the two, the wrong one was restored....doh !

here are few pictures showing the slight difference. The snorkel is not exactly at the same location....it's very subtle, but it's the truth !

Look at the distance between the square opening and the snorkel for both:

On the following pictures, every openings are aligned.....and the snorkel is off, slightly....

Is it for sale ? If yes, can you show us more picture of the whole assy, including the vacuum valve ? Does the vacuum valve still work well ?

Also another slight difference between the two air cleaner I bought (pictures above), is in the bottom of the wrong one, there a lot of little holes all around the bottom....not on the other one.

I have heard that adding the holes in the bottom of the air cleaner was a way to increase the breath of the motor

That's quite possible Chris, my mechanic think the same.

A quick question for the community: does the air filter for the 69 L48 is the exact same as for the 1970 L48 ?

The holes did make a difference. On my 68 GTO I turned the lid upside down which let air in and it really showed power.

Problem solved: I finally found an air cleaner on eBay, coming from an L48 1970 Camaro and it fits perfect ! That's the only one I've been able to find for sale, and the seller was very gentle to ship it to Canada.

Thanks to all, I can't wait to see my car running like new once again !
