Two tone paint on a 69 Z/28 ?
« on: December 18, 2015, 07:17:09 AM »
Can it be confirmed that Two tone paint was never applied by the factory to a 1969 Z28?  I had to agree with several friends during a discussion about this application.  If one of the six two tone paint schemes, 55-50, 51-53, etc. was applied to a Z/28, it would not effect the rally stripes of a Z/28, and would appear as a vinyl top.  Therefore, is there a living example in existence?  If not, Why not?

Thanks,
Bryan

I don't know, but there is no restriction in the Dealer Ordering Information on two-tone paint - it appears to have been available on any model.

Thanks JohnZ, I have only seen 8-10 two tone cars of any kind, several were big block SS cars.  I didn't see any reason why a Z/28 couldn't have been produced with the scheme.  Maybe one will appear one day!

Thanks,

There  is a drag car here in Rochester that started life as a Z/28 - two tone red with white painted top.  Too many alterations to bring back, let alone the long gone drive train. X33 car

Pacecar,

Is there any possibility that you could get a photo of the trim tag, for the paint code from this Z/28?  This car could be a special paint car, possibly a -- -- PNT trim tag.  There were six two tone color combinations listed in 1969, red was not listed.  BUT, anything is possible!

Here is a list of the SIX two tone paint combinations for 1969.

53 - 50  Glacier Blue / Dover White
55 - 50  Azure Turquoise / Dover White
53 - 51  Glacier Blue / Dusk Blue
51 - 53  Dusk Blue / Glacier Blue
65 - 50  Olympic Gold / Dover White
61 - 63  Burnished Brown / Champagne

The top color appeared as a vinyl top from a distance, and was in the same configuration as a vinyl top and used the same trim as a vinyl top.

If any other two tone color combination besides the six listed above, appears in existence, and has a dual paint code to back it up, it would need to be reported here to CRG.

Could a -- special paint be used to fabricate another two tone combination?

Continued from reply #7, here are some other percentages and production figures.

In 1969, the two tone paint was estimated at 5,909 units and a total production of 2.4% at a cost of $31.60 per unit.

The total production of two tone paint at 2.4% can be compared to Tuxedo Black at 2.0%, Azure Turquoise at 2.0%, Burnished Brown at 2.5%, and Burgundy at 2.0% for total production.

I would think that a Z/28 with two tone paint would be less popular and therefore would be less produced than these four colors of comparable percentages.  I would also think that a Z/28 with two tone paint would be put in a rarity category.

We had hoped that an example would have appeared out of archives or a collection, complete with photo and trim tag info!

So using the combinations from above a Z-28 could possibly have THREE colors on it? I think that would go in the weird column.

Three colors??   such as...     61 - 63  Burnished Brown / Champagne  ...   with white or black stripes??

which would be burnished brown on the bottom, a champagne top, and probably 'white' stripes??   but if the stripes were champagne...  now THAT would be an interesting factory car..  :)

Yes, that would appear *different* to say the least...   :)

That would not be any different than having a Tuxedo Black (10) car with a Midnight Green vinyl top (S) and white stripes or a Olympic Gold (65) car with a Dark Brown vinyl top (F) with black stripes.  Same thing, three colors.

Way late, but I recently stumbled across this thread...

I have one that appears to be legit. When I bought it many years ago, the top was painted the same body color like a standard coupe, but when I stripped the paint during the restoration I found the original rivets for the trim strip were present and had been ground flush. I reinstalled the rivets and trim strip and put it back to match the trim tag. I’ve never seen another Z-28 and very few standard coupes with the two-tone paint code...

Very cool. Love the color combo. Surprised with the eye for correctness you didn't go with a silver grill though.

Was your car a flat hood, non spoiler car?

While I know it's not correct, I kinda liked the out-of-the-box grill color and left it that way. This car came with a functional cowl hood and spoilers, but it's definitely a Frankenstein model. I just wanted a good-looking, functionally-correct weekend driver that I didn't have to have originality/value worries about. Lots of stock-ish but not technically-correct part numbers or date codes. It's an essentially-correct 302 with an M21 Muncie and 4.10 ratio 12-bolt rear end. Most of the specs match the originals...

MAN I LOVE IT!!!
I haven't seen too many Glacier blue Z28's, with the white roof and white stripes, I am lusting after it... the white sets it off.
And of course the fact that it doesn't have black interior+++

Hate to tell you, but the tag has been off the car and modified. It's an original 2-tone car, but the 33 in the X33 was added.

Not necessarily! I blew up the picture and it appears the code "might" be X77. What do you guys think? A better picture would be better, but I think it's X77, so it would still be a Z28 that someone added Z21 to.

414blue, can you get us a higher resolution picture of just the X code?

By no means picking this guy's car apart. Just concerning the trim tag 33 font size broader then the rest of the tag,,top of the 7's. I'm no expert, just not consistent with the rest of the script, if 7's were there.

Although the pic does make them appear that way, the rallies aren't really that blue. They were actually painted the correct argent silver...

Figured the car would get picked at here, but I thought it was worth taking a chance on posting it anyway to provide an example of what the color combo looks - or would look - like, whether the tag's been modified at some point in the past or not. I've had it since '87 and that's the way I bought it. As I said before, it's a car that's definitely been apart and put back together from multiple source vehicles before I got it. I'll just run it and enjoy it for what it is. Thanks for the positive responses on the car, guys. We'll see you all out there...

Ed,
The spacing is way off. The two characters should be where the first character and the space are currently.
