Spiral Shocks

Curious if someone knows the correct original part numbers for the shocks that would have come on a 68 SS 396/325 with a M20? I have been finding different info in all my books and manuals. Thinking 3192477 & 3192851 but have found some sources saying 3192826 & 3192831??? What Gives??? Please help!!!!

Also, I know when you ordered the SS you got what's referred to in books as a "special suspension" with the SS package. Am I correct in assuming that was the F41 package and if so did the shocks follow that or still varied with other options i.e. AC/engine/whatever?

Thanks!!!

The correct spiral shocks for your B/B are 319477 and 3192851. The 3192826 and 3192831 are for the base car with rear mono leaf springs. The rear shock # 3192851 on the multi leaf springs uses lower mounting stud and the mono rear shock # 3192831 use a nut and bolt for mounting to lower spring plate.

Ok, so 477 & 851, and am I correct in thinking the 477 has a broadcast code of PS for 68 and 851 has UN?
Any takers on the SS suspension being same as F41 question???

1968 L35 equipped Camaro shock broadcast codes are PW front, TN rear.  PS and UN are 69 Z28 shock broadcast codes.

Mark,
Just want to be sure that's correct, according to the Camaro restoration guide, page 114 states 477 is PS for 67-69 and PW for 69 only (that's were the confusion comes in) and 851 is UN for 68 only.  TN is listed as 3192832 for 68 4spd w/o F41 & 69 L34, L35, L72, L78, L89.  This is why I am having so much trouble locking this down, I can't find anything that states the applications clearly.  Just curious, where are you getting your info from?
Thanks, Chris.

Off a 68 L35 big block chassis broadcast sheet and a 69 Z28 chassis broadcast sheet.  Front shocks in 68 are the same in both a 327/275 and the L35, but different shocks were used in 6 cylinder cars.

Out of all the 68 broadcast sheets I have this is what I've found.
from body broadcast sheets
Late production L30/M20 with A/C Rear shock UN. (BBC)
L30/M20 rear shock UN (BBC)
L35/M40 rear shock TN (BBC)
Z28/M20 rear shock UN (BBC)

From chassis broadcast sheets
68 L35 front PW, rear TN - front springs are YQ rear are OH.
68 L22 L6 with powerglide front TG rear, TN - front springs are YL rear are BV.
68 L35 with TH400 trans, front PW, rear TN - front springs are YQ and rear are OH.

67 LF7 powerglide front LG, rear LH - front springs are YU rear are BX.
67 LF7 powerglide with A/c front LG, rear LH - front springs are YY, rear are YC.

Mark,
I don't know if you helped Chris, but you solved a dilemma for me and created another. My front springs(68rsss396) had the YQ tag still attached, but I couldn't find any referrence to that code in the parts manuals.I thought somebody my have swapped them years ago.
My Camaro resto guide refers that YQ tag to 327/350's although I know you need to crosscheck his info. where do you buy new spring tags? Thanks Paul

Paul,
In digging deeper into my books it looks like any combination of spring/shock "could" have come on any given car based on WEIGHT with the chosen options.  I'm sure there was some basic standard but we all know nothing was set in stone with these cars.  Do the tags look original?  If they do I wouldn't mess with them, otherwise you can get them at any of the vendors, try Kenny at www.SS396.com or Ricks www.firstgen.com
Mark, you did help, THANKS!!!
Chris.

Chris
I'm attempting a full nut & bolt resto hence the springs need to be sandblasted or replaced. The tags would never survive that besides they are not remotely close to pristine condition. They are the original tags with the part # on them but no way to salvage them.I checked Rick's,Classic and D&R prior to posting  none of them list a YQ tag. Paul

Thanks!

Here's a quickie list of 68 shock broadcast codes:
Fronts: TG - L6 & LF7,   PS - L35,   PW - L30/M20 & L35
Rears: TM - L6 & LF7,   TN - L35,   UM - LF7w/F41,   UN - L30/M20, L48, L35, L78, Z28

That list of the front codes is missing several models of cars. :(
