D96 Pinstripe on Z28
« on: November 27, 2015, 10:40:52 AM »
There have been several recent threads on optional stripes for '69 models, and the question of Z28s possibly having D96 pinstripes as part of Z22/21 in particular has been discussed numerous times. Whenever this comes up, the consensus opinion is that only one stripe package was possible (except for Z10/Z11) and that any car with both is either incorrectly restored, or a previous owner added the pinstripes.
I was just looking through the 1969 Research Topics page (http://www.camaros.org/TopicsofResearch.shtml#1969Topics) and noted topic #4:
Quote
Phase-out of the D96 fender striping on 1969 Z28s with Z21 or Z22 (February?).
So is there evidence that Z28s with Z21 or Z22 also included D96 pinstripes up to around mid production, or is this an old research topic and the answer is as stated previously (only one stripe package was available on Z28 throughout the model year)?

Chevrolet continually revised optional equipment for the '69 model year. An update to the Showroom Album dated September 12, 1968 states:

"FENDER STRIPING (RPO D96, Body-side accent stripe) included with Rally-Sport and Style Trim Group. Not available with Sport Striping (SS or RPO D90). Available in combination with Front Accent Striping (RPO DX1) or with RPO Z28."

I interpret this to indicate is D96 was now optional with Z/28 or DX1 and Z21/Z22, no longer included.

This insinuates some very early production Z21 and Z22 Z/28s were built with D96. Back in June 2014 there was an early production [mid-September '68] Z/28-RS on ebay. The car was rough and had a poor repaint early in its life. The repaint had mostly flaked off and D96 striping was visible.

Guessing here, I'd say Z21 & Z22 Z/28s included D96 striping for a short period of time. Per the Showroom Album Revision, D96 was no longer included but became optional as of late September '68. As an option D96 is rare, 5,176 cars. At some point, possibly the January '69 revision, the one stripe per car restriction was put in place.

Based on my db by the end of September '68 only 600-700 Z/28s had been produced. Of those about 58% had Z21 or Z22. That's about 400 cars; maybe a few more were also ordered with D96. Small wonder I have never seen an OE paint Z/28 with D96.

In conclusion, best guess D96 on a Z/28 with Z21/Z22:

August-September '68 probably included
October '68-December '68 optional but very rare
January '69 to the end of production-no longer available.

Thanks William, that is the best and clearest response I have read to date on the subject. Much appreciated.

I had an early '69 Z-28 that came with the D96 stripes. I bought it off the showroom floor.

It was Fathom Green, green seats, black vinyl top, all white stripes, no spoilers.  It was a very sharp car...the D96 brightened up the dark side without overdoing it.  I don't recall seeing any other Zs with the D96 pinstripes...but there were many cars back then...and I'm old  ;)

Interesting topic.

I purchased my Norwood build 05A RS Z28 in November 1995 and started the restoration soon after purchased it.  It had the D96 pin strips which at the time I thought may have been added by a previous owner.  I was never quite sure if they were a factory applied option, added by a dealer, or by an independent painter, so when I restored the car I left them off.

My Z28 had just over 45K miles on the odometer at the time I purchased it, and many of the original parts were still on the car.  I discovered that the rear spoiler still had the original blue lacquer paint on it.  The body paint had been redone in lacquer at some point in the past. Given that fact I assume the D96 were added during the repaint.

I am attempting to track down the ownership history on the car to get more information.  I have the NCRS Shipping Data Report indicating the car's production date was 5/5/1969 and sold thru Glockner Chevrolet in Portsmouth, OH, who is remains the longest continuous running Chevrolet Dealership in the US!.  I have title work from the owner I purchased the Camaro from dating back to 1989.  Now I need to fill in the ownership history gap between those two dates!

P.S. Yes...I contacted Glockner and they reported they lost their sales record archive in a building fire many years ago.  This was quite a bummer!
