69 Vinyl Top Windshield Trim Molding Reveal Retainer Clips
« on: November 23, 2015, 06:04:46 PM »
After looking around for info on replacement clips for the front windshield molding, I saw one post where someone mentioned they thought there was a difference between a painted roof coupe and a vinyl top roof coupe. I knew mine were different and didn't appear to have ever been removed. Original vinyl top and original date coded glass along with good condition trim... Anyone know the reason for the difference? It seems like the regular clips could cover the added thickness of the vinyl.
I'm posting this so someone can find the information a lot easier. If someone sees something off in my information here, let me know. There is a misprint or omission in the AMK catalog page 160, but it's listed correctly on page 338 under p/n: G-6552. The clips listed for Camaro Fr & Rr 70-75 are also for vinyl top 69s (possibly other years as well). I confirmed w/ AMK that their p/n G-6552 and B-10707 are the same.

Painted roof front windshield side and top clips. GM p/n: 9895598 & AMK #s B-10059 (8 pcs), B-10894 (22 pcs) & G-4639

Vinyl Top front windshield side and top clips. GM p/n: 8717859, 9854717 or 9606232 & AMK #s B-10707 (10 pcs), B-10892 (22 pcs) & G-6552

Rear Window. GM p/n: 7698976 or 8736591. AMK #s B-10386 (10 pcs), B10706 (20 pcs) or G-6539

Front Lower. GM p/n: 1651460 or 7663148. AMK #s B-10711 (4 pcs) or G-4665

You can get those clips through W&E Sales, which most jobbers carry. There is an OEM part number cross reference chart in the back of their catalog. They can be bought cheap by the box, and I stock numerous types. No need to worry about AMK's minimum order. The ramp style is nice because the elevation can be adjusted if necessary. There are other ramp styles without the teeth that will work. Auveco is another source for hardware.

Thanks guys. Hopefully it'll help somebody out. I saw the ones from Auveco & W&E Scott. I have the W&E catalog downloaded. The only thing that holds me back from buying theirs is that they look like they're natural finish. AMK seems to have them phosphate coated. I might shoot over to NPD and grab them. I have one close by and they're an AMK dealer.

Nope, W&E are coated, not natural. I have boxes of various types and all are coated in different colors. None are natural, uncoated. AMK is not manufacturing them, they are just repackaging clips that bodyshops get from their jobbers at a cheaper price. If my jobbers do not have a type in stock, they just order them and they arrive the same or next day. Anyone can call a jobber for fasteners.

Your post will be helpful to those who are seeking clip types.

Glad to hear it. It was hard to tell from their pictures. I'll take a closer look at them.

What do you guys think about these two? They're for the vinyl top trim. Most of the kits out their aren't even close. OER makes a close kit, but the plastic clips are clear, not black. I know you can't see them, but... The corner bolt type clips all have springs on them, but the factory ones don't look they did originally. It's possible the spring broke off, but it doesn't look like it.

I do not believe ANY of the parts places (amk, hbc, etc.) have the correct clips for non vinyl top cars.

I have no idea if they fit vinyl top cars.

Well that doesn't make things look very promising. There's got to be some decent clips out there. The hunt is on...

The box of ramp style I have does not have the teeth. They are just like your part # FC9546 from your Shop Supplies source. I bought them from Auveco through my jobber, part #9749. I've used them and other non-ramp styles on the last two jobs with no issues with molding installation, elevation, or retention. They were all high quality clips. I'll have to look through my stock to see what others I've used successfully.

Establish a relationship with your local jobber(s). Order clips and if they don't work because you chose the wrong one, just return them. After a few jobs you can tell by looking at a clip if it will work, even if it is not identical to the one removed from the car.

Those clips had spring arms, they just broke off which is typical. The remnants of them are visible.

Non ramp style windshield molding clips that I use successfully are Auveco 11067.

So am I correct in understanding that there is no correct replacement molding clips for my 68Z without vinyl top? Or is this just a 69 and/or vinyl top thing?  At one point I saved a thread about the front and rear being different on mine, but I don't remember any discussion on clips being incorrect.

I'm not certain about 68. All the research that I had done was on 69.
