Responsible for the design of the 69 Camaro?
« on: October 19, 2015, 11:49:49 AM »
Hi there,
I've a couple of dumb questions I've been thinkin about for a while now and I tried to search for info here and on the web but I didn't find any answers:

1. Who's the designer responsible for the fabulous design of the 69 Camaro?

2. Is the design features like the aggressive front and the side louvers made to make the car look like shark or what? I mean they did make the Corvette Stingray......

Chevy/GM was design by committee in those days. I have never heard of one name associated with the design.

Best resource with some interesting photos of design proposals that didn't make it is "The Great Camaro" a book by Michael Lamm. Should be able to find a copy on line someplace.

I believe a gentleman by the name of Larry Shinoda is credited with the design of the 1969 cowl induction hood at least.

Yup, and the Corvette as well. Seems like a lot of the automotive people moved between the big three during their careers.

Larry Shinoda was a stylist at Chevy who also had involvement with the '63 Corvette I believe. Shinoda was trusted ally of Bunkie Knudsen, a GM executive who had become restless. Henry Ford II brought Bunkie in as Ford VP in '68; Shinoda came along.

Didn't work out for either of them.

Thanx for all info, guys! :)
Is "The Great Camaro" by Michael Lamm the best book overall for correct info regarding the 1 gen Camaro history?

The book is not exclusively 1st Gens; 2nd gen is covered as well. It was published in 1978 so some of the people and history behind the car from concept through production were available. Lamms' book is the reason the VINs for the 1st 25 production '67 Z/28s are known. Someone at Chevy [probably Vince Piggins] still had the dealer list and gave it to him when he was researching the book.

If you're looking for the story behind the Camaro it remains the best resource. If I were him I'd re-release it.

Is this book that I've been looking for for years?
Is there pictures of Berger ZL1 # 3 when it was new and had COPO Paint on ZL2 hood?
I read a book a long time ago about the Camaro and tried to find it again.
What was interesting is that there are pictures of the cars when they were new.
