Responsible for the design of the 69 Camaro?
« on: October 19, 2015, 11:49:49 AM »
Hi there,
I've a couple of dumb questions I've been thinkin about for a while now and I tried to search for info here and on the web but I didn't find any answers:

1. Who's the designer responsible for the fabulous design of the 69 Camaro?

2. Is the design features like the aggressive front and the side louvers made to make the car look like shark or what? I mean they did make the Corvette Stingray......

Chevy/GM was design by committee in those days. I have never heard of one name associated with the design.

Best resource with some interesting photos of design proposals that didn't make it is "The Great Camaro" a book by Michael Lamm. Should be able to find a copy on line someplace.

I believe a gentleman by the name of Larry Shinoda is credited with the design of the 1969 cowl induction hood at least.

Yup, and the Corvette as well. Seems like a lot of the automotive people moved between the big three during their careers.

Larry Shinoda was a stylist at Chevy who also had involvement with the '63 Corvette I believe. Shinoda was trusted ally of Bunkie Knudsen, a GM executive who had become restless. Henry Ford II brought Bunkie in as Ford VP in '68; Shinoda came along.

Didn't work out for either of them.

Thanx for all info, guys! :)
Is "The Great Camaro" by Michael Lamm the best book overall for correct info regarding the 1 gen Camaro history?

The book is not exclusively 1st Gens; 2nd gen is covered as well. It was published in 1978 so some of the people and history behind the car from concept through production were available. Lamms' book is the reason the VINs for the 1st 25 production '67 Z/28s are known. Someone at Chevy [probably Vince Piggins] still had the dealer list and gave it to him when he was researching the book.

If you're looking for the story behind the Camaro it remains the best resource. If I were him I'd re-release it.

Is this book that I've been looking for for years?
Is there pictures of Berger ZL1 # 3 when it was new and had COPO Paint on ZL2 hood?
I read a book a long time ago about the Camaro and tried to find it again.
What was interesting is that there are pictures of the cars when they were new.

None of the 69 ZL1s had special paint. ZL1 #3 was Daytona Yellow, an RPO color. Still has most of its original paint. Some, #55 for example, received custom paint treatment at the dealership.

There is a ZL1 site on Facebook:

Sure did; only COPO known at this time have been built with DX1. Looks sharp with the ducted hood. You can view the cars' $7919.85 invoice here: http://www.camaros.org/images/copo/copo8.jpg

Now restored and owned by Craig Jackson.

I just bought the Lamm book on Amazon used $6.06 with shipping.  ;D

I still have a set of NOS black DX1 stripes in the boxes, because I really liked the look of them. But now that I learned on CRG that no SS came with DX1, I guess I should sell them on EBAY. Maybe some black SS stripes will come up for auction.

Who wants a used one? ;)
Good find!
Regarding the DX-1, do you know it there is one set complete made of all vinyl and NOT a stencil for painting?
I think it would be nice to put it on and when you don't want it anymore, just rip it off instead of permanent painted one! :)

Used lets me buy more camaro stuff. :)

I don't know if they make a DX1 stripe kit that includes the entire stripe. These are NOS, and like the D90 stripe so the factory painted the nose portion and then applied these spear decals up the hood. Probably would only interest an enthusiast that "needs" authenticity, because frankly why not paint the entire stripe? Anyone know why they would use a deal rather than paint the entire stripe in the original build?

I wonder if a D90 decal is different than a DX1 decal, other than the length. Different part numbers in the AIM. If I get an NOS D90 stripe decal I will compare the two.

I agree with you, why a stripe made of two different material!
Personally I think a complete decal is the smartest way, easy to change if you don't want on anymore and easy to put back on when you're ready again!
....as always...if you want anything done, do it yourself!  :P I think I'll contact a my local decal-shop!

My understanding is that Fisher body did the painted part and GM applied the stickers to match the lines to the parts they installed.

It would be difficult to get the stripes to line-up if they were all painted.

That's true, Kurt!
But why hasn't anybody made a complete decal-kit for the aftermarket, it´s even easier to line up if everything if it´s a decal! ;)

I think Rick's has complete decal kits for several of the stripes.

Original GM production methods for 1968-69 Camaros utilized the "doghouse" assembly style, which included the fenders, painted separately from the rest of the body. If the car was to receive the optional SS & RPO D90 sport striping, the factory also painted the fender stripes. After assembling the whole body, they applied self-adhesive vinyl on the doors to complete the sport striping. This vinyl decal set from Rick's, manufactured to original factory striping specifications, allows you to easily do the job with a self-adhesive, vinyl decal which duplicates the SS & RPO D90 sport striping on your car without the risk and expense associated with painting.

I think they just mean they have decals for the door, not the complete  striping kit!

If that's correct, it's perfect! :)

Ah yes, sorry I didn't know you were only interested in the DX1. You are correct, then make decal-only kits for all of the stripes except the DX1.

Could you possible ask them by any chance, if they can make the DX-1 as a complete vinyl kit?
It's hard to reach them by phone from Sweden and US companies seldom use email as a way of communication, that's my own experience!   ::) :-[

Yep, I did it before you even asked. I went to the website of the mfg Phoenix Graphix and submitted a request via email. Response below...

Thank you for your interest in Phoenix Graphix! Unfortunately the DX1 is
only available as a stencil. We're sorry we couldn't be of more help. If you
have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

Yep, I did it before you even asked. I went to the website of the mfg Phoenix Graphix and submitted a request via email. Response below...

Wow, thanx! :D
....and they really did answer, that's great!
It's a pity though, with the answer.... :'(
....it wouldn't be hard for Phoenix to make one I guess.....I have to contact them myself now that I know they use email!  ;)

Zl-1 #3 did have a black lace stripe right up the middle at one point. If you know where to look you can still see where it was repainted years ago. Is this the stripe your thinking of?

It had a black stripe on the hood as many other COPO 9560-9561 and Dealers did it because they would be more easily sold.
Thats why its, "called" the COPO Paint.
I dident mean Special COPO Paint as Special ordered Paint

Different stripe and it was not put on by Berger. It was on prior to Rose owning the car and could have been done by Meyer & Gibas , Lutz or Buckner... Just not Berger or Rose. It went over the hood roof and deck from what I remember. I did not see the car with the stripe, just with the stripe removed and holding much of it's factory paint. Very cool car.
