Firestone Wide Oval redline
« on: December 21, 2015, 12:52:38 PM »
For my 69 RS Daytona yellow, I'm wondering if the redline tires could be ordered back then as a factory option ? I'm also wondering how redline tires would look with Daytona yellow colour ?

Back in 1969, my father had the same colour combo as mine, and according to the only picture I have from his RS, there seems to be redline tires installed on it. Looking at this picture, do you think it's redline on my father's car ?

That's an interesting photograph, and it's great that you have it.. :)

and it sure appears to have some type of 'redline' tire on it in that photo.  Do you know the date of the photo?  and I'm curious where it's shot...  very interesting scenery (for a southern fella).. :)

Hi Eric - I don't know anything about original redlines. The Cooper reproduction has a smaller red line.

But the reason I'm posting is about those fog lights. Are you planning to put the same on your camaro? I saw this Ebay auction, and it made me think of the lights in your picture.

Hello guys and thanks for the replies !

@69Z28-RS (Gary): that's in fact the only picture I have from my father's car, and he sold the car 3 years before I was born ! This picture was taken in October 1970, in a place called "Monts-Valin" and it's about 1 hour drive, north of a city called "Chicoutimi", and it's where I was born and raise (Chicoutimi).

On this Mountain (Monts-valin), snow appears mostly in October, very early compare with the rest of the province of Quebec, so it's a very popular place for Snowmobile, downhill/crosscountry ski or snow shoes walk. Unfortunately, my father don't remember what was the tires on the car originally, and don't remember as well if he was putting snow tires on his car back then, like we do on our cars today. I believe the common practice was to put 2 winter tires on the rear wheels only, with few sandbags in the truck to improve traction !

So I cannot even tell if the tires on this pictures we're the originals ones, or some winter tires. The original hubcap seems to be removed....that's all I know, and my father remember that he never had those Poverty dog dish (Daytona yellow rim) on his car.....that's all he can remember by now so far !

@abiddle: it's nice that you found those on eBay, but I think I'll keep mine like it is, bone stock. My father added hisself, this fog lamp kit, hood lock and this "unique" strip on his hood as well, but I prefer to go OEM as much as possible. Now I do have found a set of original FC Coded 14x6 wheels, and a set of NOS P-01 hubcaps, I'm just wondering which brand/model of F70-14 tires I'll put on the car.

Assuming the car sold new in Canada and you knew the VIN you can get the GM of Canada options list for the car, and that may list the redline tires in the options list for the car.

Red lines would rock on a yellow car and were available. PW8 was a bias-ply F70 x 14 red line; PY5 was a fiberglass belted F70 x 14 red line.

If I go to the Firestone Wide-O-val Redline, like this picture, what would be the correct option on the Built sheet ?

My father's RS was Canadian sold, but unfortunately I don't have the VIN. I ask already if they could retrieve the VIN, knowing the date the car was bought, and the name/adress of the local dealer, but they can't do nothing without VIN. Mine was sold in Florida.

I have no idea on the quality of the current reproduction Firestone Wide Ovals (redline or otherwise), but my wife bought a new M**tang Mach I in 1970 that came with the Firestone Wide Ovals (F70-14 white wall) and they were so sorry, it was well over 30 yrs before I would even set foot in a Firestone store.... :)

I don't mind very much about the quality of the tire itself, I'll keep driving my BF's as daily on my 15x7 Rally repro.
