Steve, There are TWO different types that different people call original.

First, there is the type that most vendors sell, which are the type that look like the end of a regular stud or bolt and has a dimple drilled or machined into the end.  I bought several sets of this type from Jerry M.  Corvette vendor's also have these.

Second, My intake and Gary's (69z28-RS) intake from his HO Z has the type with the undercut machined at the end of the threads.  I have seen several other examples of survivor type cars, and they had this type also.  Please check out the tread of Chick's friend's Hugger Orange survivor Z, this car has this type of carb. stud also.  (Look for the engine photo's in Chick's thread.)  I think this type stud is very hard to find, and are THE original carb stud, especially for a Z28.

Steve, exactly, those studs I was referring to are for carb mounting to intake.  Please check out the Hugger Orange survivor.  If enough restorers start requesting these, they will start making them.

Paul, thanks for pulling that photo over, wish I could do that.

Steve, Good luck finding a set of these studs.  I nearly bought a 472 intake last year JUST to get another set of these studs.  I'm kicking myself for not buying it.  Steve, without luck involved, I seriously think you would have to find an intake with the studs intact to be able to acquire any.  You might see one set for every 30 to 50 or more 472 intakes.  I've been looking.

Picture of almost NOS 69 Z28 Intake, been sitting since 70, it was bought over the GM parts counter in 69. The carb studs are black and small unthreaded portion appears longer.

As usual, thought provoking topics on CRG -

I had to go dig out the Z intake, off the engine and stored since '80, car was bought in '73 - thank goodness I never changed them, They actually have remnants of dichromate where the carb base protected them - all four.

Steve

I'm happy to see such a strong response regarding this correct carb stud.  I count six different 69's listed here, either by photo or mention, and another set on James blue 69Z survivor just posted.  My point, these speed shop / Mr. Gasket type studs with the dimple, as sold by most vendors as correct, are not correct.  I saw many 69 Camaro's at the Nationals with this dimple stud score above 990 points.  Hmmmm!

Steve, yes it seems that unfortunately, we can't talk about anything anymore without getting taken advantage of.  At least, maybe some will become available to make a deal.

Steve, I removed the carb from my 2B Norwood 69 RS Z/28 project and the studs look the same as yours with clear evidence of gold dichromate plating.

Been checking and our limited review & what others have shown indicates there were two styles, neither of which are what are sold by vendors stating "correct"!
It seems this style (again, small amount checked) if found quite often and observed in both Big Block and Small Block intakes. This intake/carb are from a Corvette 65 327.

And a set I was going to use for our 68Z as our intakes originals were taken out at some time which might have been when intake was re-skinned (tumbled/vibratory).

Chick.....my original ones have evidence of Gold Dichromate coloring.  The upper thread coloring is now gone but if you look on the bottom of the stud (the section that was screwed in to the manifold) the gold coloring is still there.  Don't have time at present to get you a photo (got an eye doctor appointment coming up today) but will try later on this afternoon.

Essentially all of the 'known original' 69 Holley Carb Studs posted in this thread have shown the dichromate coloring.. doesn't seem to be much doubt about that.

The pictures I took and posted do not look like gold dichromate or yellow zinc visually in person. Mike posted a picture of a NOS 69 intake purchased in 69 and they appeared to be same as I have and posted but granted not sure where or what mine came off and maybe it had to do with service replacement. It seems most of the communication concerning gold dichromate appears where the carb base was so could it be something on how the stud was installed?????? I do believe it seems there have been two very similar machined styles so far. A bare 66 BBC intake with no carb on it a friend has showed the same small step stud as most here but appeared to have no yellow or gold look and I would say neither the orange 69 Z/28 (Skip) or 68Z survivors appear to be gold dichromate. Here is a picture of our carb stud on our purchased new March69 built L78 Nova. Interesting subject as one would think we would have this question well in hand...
