8 or B for 1968
« on: July 13, 2015, 11:23:21 AM »
Gday gents,
This is the VIN on my 68 convertible
As you can see there seems to be a B stamped where the 8 should be..is this common ? or is there something sinister going on here.

If that's the VIN on your dash, that's definitely not an original GM VIN plate.  Its some kind of home made one.  Maybe the original was lost, number reissued by the state, or maybe something more sinister.

Jonesey that's definitely an unusual stamp. Whereabouts in Aus are you? Feel free to PM if you want to have a yarn.

OK...I have to ask.....what does this mean "yarn"?
It has to be more than knitting needles :-)
That stamping looks like it is on a machined pad. I can see the machine marks faintly.

Thanks for the replies. A yarn means a chat..the car is located in Aust. I may have to pull the whole dash out to take a better look.

The VIN plate shouldn't be stamped, it should be embossed.

Below is what a factory '68 VIN plate should look like.

Good morning -

I think you are correct Kurt - if this is on the dash pad?

Jonesey - any chance you can post a photo from a little farther away?

There you go.
Definatatly a dodgy then by looking at your originals above.looks like I will have to pull the dash out and see what is really behind there.

You should also check the two partial VINs stamped on the body.

The locations are shown here...  http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#PartialVIN

Definitely not an original VIN tag -

The cowl hidden VIN can usually be seen without having to take anything apart - I would start there....

I found the partial VIN just under the air intake - wipers. Yep it is an 8 and the rest of the numbers match.Just have to take a squiz under that dodgy tag to see what the go is..

Good that the partial matches. As stated in my PM, I think the original VIN plate may have been damaged, either by impact or rust, and a previous owner made a new one; they may have mistaken the '8' for a 'B'. Pure speculation, but most deliberate attempts to defraud usually involve the VIN from another car, or a fake (reproduction) tag that would not swap a letter with a number.
