462 or 291 heads on a May 1967 350 block (3892657)
« on: November 17, 2006, 01:22:49 PM »
I have a 1967 RS/SS Convertible built in Norwood 06C (May 3rd week) and the car is without a drivetrain.

I know I need a 3892657 350 engine block, but was reading on an RCG article that later in the build year they switched from the 462 cylinder heads over to a 291 cylinder heads.

With my car being a May (3rd week) 1967 assembly date which was probably a early May assembled motor what heads are correct for my application?   462's or 291's???

Thanks!

Something don't sound right.  06C is the third week of June not May.  I believe a may built engine could have had either casting.

I don't have the date for the Camaro, but the 291's replaced the 462's in the Corvette in mid-march; my June 8th-built Corvette has 291's cast in late May.

Too much coffee...

Yes... its an 06C (June 3rd week).

So it sounds like I should be using the 291 heads if the engine was assembled on late May/early June then?

I always thought the #291s were only used in very late '67 and 1968 before the alternator bolt holes appeared. I do know that a lot of '68 Z/28s had #291s--I have a pair. And there were 2 different #291s--the 1.94" valve heads didn't have factory machining to unshroud the intake valves like the hi-po 2.02" valve heads. This is why I love this site--you always learn something new.
