L89 at Local Car Show
« on: June 13, 2015, 11:31:52 PM »
A couple friends and I went to a local church car show today and there was a L89 Camaro there, and its a local car! Picture of the window sticker not very good due to behind glass and sun but the build sheet is amazing. Was told it was up under the dash area. Bergy was there also and maybe he saw it as well. They were expecting 1000 cars at this church show. Amazing!

I've seen that car many times Chick.  Lots of concerns.  Great show though - actually 1,300 + cars there.  Cool Ammon R. Smith sold, barn find, original paint '65 Corvette.  Your L78 Nova was standing tall!

Thanks Bruce! Went looking for you for the 2nd time just after the free ice cream but you had apparently left. Could not believe the cars already there at 9am when it was to start. Was told the first car arrived at 6:05 that morning! Some serious car members. :)

All the "paperwork" is fake-that's the form for an A body build sheet. Camaros used two forms: a Body Broadcast Copy and a Chassis Broadcast Copy.

The window sticker has so many errors I don't know where to start. L89 was not an engine option it was a cylinder head option that required the L78 engine; both are listed on real paperwork. The ducted hood wasn't in production when this car was built; wrong ECL. 5Z27AB is the ECL for an SS350.

Looks like the tag has been off the car.

Makes me wonder what else is fake.

Sure looks like they over smashed the right rivet during re-install. Sure never seen a factory one all flat like that. I would be curious to see the BACK of those rivets to see the rosette. I am running on some of the the least amount of knowledge on this site, but I say the cowl tag has been installed by the factory... NOT!! Just another car with a nice paint job worth 40K less than the owner thinks... Danny

I live near Hershey, was on rt.283 pretty early this AM and saw lots of cars headed that way. I saw this car about 10 years ago at a local show. He tried real hard to convince me it was real. I didn't bite because I didn't really know.

Thanks William! Since it was local and heard the story of the car along with the paperwork I thought it was possibly real but some things concerned me. I know nothing about the build sheets so some good info given. The one thing that struck me was the date for the rear being a Sept built for a Dec car and here I thought if this was real paperwork I could learn from it.

That sticker is the best, my friend Jack (crg member) loves pointing out that sticker on cars. Like you once he sees that sticker, all bets are off....

I asked him about it Jim and he said he knew now its a Ford thing as he'd been told about it many times and said he was going to take it off. Since it's a somewhat local car guess we will see in the future.

It is getting to point where I see more finished cars with that sticker than without it. As time goes on it will be a correct item for any resto....

Very true.  I haven't seen them much on restored GM products but I see them on the Fords all the time.  Not correct on the Fords either but from the info I've gathered, as these cars were new back then and came in for service, most times those stickers were added by techs.  At least that's what I've found from researching Fords.
So alot of guys that know they aren't correct on Fords are putting them on during restorations and calling it a "day two" mod.  Though technically not the type of "day two" mods that us gear heads normally associate with that term.
I don't know if this holds any weight with GM stuff or not, but very common for dealers to put them on the Fords.

You know this is a perfect example how someone (me) got so caught up with looking at some stuff and missed the obvious. I was more interested in talking to the gentlemen and hearing the story and the x code on the trim tag and some other things did not come out at the time. Know better!  :-[

Chick do't worry, I think we all have been there.
A while back me and another member were at a car show and spotted a 69 Z, we started making mental notes. When we got back to our cars, we compared what we saw. Long story short - we both picked up enough questionable items about the car we had to go back and look to confirm it had a new trim tag, and along with other hints it was most likely not a real Z.

But, if it was H.O. ,Austin, that would trump all those other minor details and make the car OK and good enough!! :P :P :P

takes a bit more than a nice paint to dazzle me.... 8)

I think if I was a fan of the original blue I would be more bummed out about the color switch.

On something really rare like an L89 or a JL8 car, it's probably best to be skeptical at first.  Rare cars don't just show up every day.

Kinda prophetic Bryon, I like it. Rare does not show up every day. Almost as if it is rare, I agree.

Clarification:
Tag was HO, car had a color change to blue along the way. Tag was only changed to add X22.

Is this car still owned by the same guy that posted back in 01?
DennyB.

Hopefully DennyB didn't change the tag, buy fake paperwork and fraudulently sell it to someone else.

He states in post #13 that he "made" it an L89 in this thread in 02: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=26216
