Radio antenna bezel
« on: June 13, 2015, 10:48:10 AM »
My car has been restored in 2007 by the previous owner. I have the Radio antenna on the car, but miss the nut/ bezel to keep it in place. I ordered a new bezel, together with an O-ring, but the diameter is way to big to fit the thread in my antenna base. Maybe I have the wrong antenna/base installed ? Maybe I ordered the wrong part from HeartbeatCamaro ? Anyone can help me please ? Here's a picture of my current antenna base.

Check and see if the base ring has Ward cast in the underside.

Assume your mast is an FM non-retractable ? Bottom doesn't look correct. Was the antenna base a unit, or carried a separate wire ?

Base nut looks like a '68 - base appears O.K.

The following pic carries 3-'69 AM mast bases, 1-'68. I'll dig up the one NOS FM '69 in inventory, and some base/bezel shots to boot. Looks like a couple of wrong parts to me -

It's a non-retractable antenna, I'm not sure how it looks like under the base, about the wire. Is it hard to remove and change ? I might order a real complete kit, from Rick's Camaro. But the bottom end of the antenna, is not like the ones on the picture. It's flat, without the lining we see on this picture.

To remove the base, I believe we have to access it from inside the wheel fender ?

I had a look through many picture on internet. The base seems the same as original, but how do you remove the top ? It just need to be unscrew counterclockwise ?

The original bezel I bought on heartbeatcamaro would just fit on top of this base, instead of the top that is on, right now ? So all I need to order to be as originally, is an antenna ?

See the following pics - you'll see an original '69 AM antenna assembly, a '69 NOS AM/FM mast and nut, and a comparison between the '69 base nut and a '68 mounted on an NOS '68 base so you can see the heigth difference. Notice the '69 AM/FM mast is smooth rather than serrated like the '69 AM ellipticals. '69's also used an assembled wire/base, '68's were separate.

Hope this helps -

By the way, it's fairly easy to change - unscrew the top antenna nut, remove the base nut, base and gasket, and the base with the ground strap will remove from the bottom. You eyes were correct, the AM/FM mast is smooth (no need to orient like the elliptical AM masts have to be).

Thanks you guys for your help ! I've ordered a repro from HeartbeatCamaro and it fits perfect. It's the AM/FM antenna, so the mast is not retractable but it looks just like the one on the picture. Thanks again for the precious help.

No problem - happy to be of assistance.

From the section of pic, looks like a pretty car. Details like this are noticeable - glad you asked -

Doesn't get a lot better than that - very nice. I like the stance as well - there is no doubt that Chevrolet got the '9's perfected.

Now, if we could have just convinced them to have started the 2010's to look like this, there'd be a whole lot more of them sold - just my opinion.

Regards,
Steve

I already installed a fix antenna (repro) on my car finally.

Someone gave me his original "oval" retractable antenna from his 69 Camaro 327, does this one would be a better fit for my car ? Here's a picture:

Can someone confirm, that the oval retractable antenna for the front right fender, was dedicated for AM radio only ?
