Does the shifter boot when used with the U17 console mount under or on top of the carpeting?

No mention of your year model, but my original 1968 Z28 with console has the boot mounted directly to the tunnel and the carpet has been cut out around the perimeter of the boot and retainer plate.

Mine is also a 68 but was in pieces when I got it. Is yours an untouched original. Want to get mine as close to how it came from the factory as possible.

If it mounted on top of the carpeting, you would have a wet carpet in the rain. The rubber boot is also a seal. 99% sure it mounts directly to the floor.
