I saw a car with plated bolts that held the front wheel moldings on. Anyone here have a survivor car with a shiney finish on these bolts? Surprised they had special bolts just for these but they did look nice

I'm sure I have my originals, but they'd be in a bucket somewhere.. and I don't recall the exact nature (but I also don't recall them being as 'shiny/bright' as those you picture. I replaced mine with stainless button head allen screws in 1977 or so to minimize tire damage on turns...

Mine have never been touched since the car was built, and they're dark phosphate.

Its a time frame thing. Mine are the bright silver. 69 04C. They are the same bolt used on the horns with a toothed washer.

I might have some pics in my file but what I have noted on survivors are similar to John's Z, that being phosphate.

That's the way I recall mine... phosphate finish (darker)...

Mine's an 02D (Norwood) Z, shipped February 28th.

I just check with Mark B., who has a Z21 optioned survivor Z. It is an LA buiklt car and it has the zinc plated bolts with captured serated washer. The use of zinc plated bolts is under Z21 option referenced in the assembly manual. I've looked at a lot of cars and can't recall any having them but it appears some did. I've observed this zinc bolt being used on early built cars to secure the horn to latch assembly.

Some thoughts on the question Bill started here. I believe the photo he posted is the COPO Camaro I restored and recently was sold at Mecum Indy.
the reason I used the bright fasteners on the front WW moldings was based on three things.
1st., In talking to a well known Camaro restorer a few years ago he asked me if I had ever seen a original 69 Z21 car with the bright fasteners, I had not, he said he had taken apart a few with the bright fasteners. He even mentioned the marks left in the moldings from the serrated washers.
2nd., This prompted me to look in the 69 Camaro AIM. re; UPC Z21, item #4 GM# 3853846,(AMK B-10900 on pg 103 of there pdf catalog.) added by revision 4 dated 10/86. Also note rev #5 on the line under R4, the note "existing screws removed. So based on this it appears the intent was to use the bright fastener, however as we know we have seen both. And it may not be consistent even on later cars ?
Maybe a good research topic ? Some of you may have old moldings off your cars and can at least check for the washer marks ?
3rd., I wanted to stir some debate :>) "Never say never"

Mike that's the orange COPO. After talking to paceme, I dug out my bolts and found one. Others must have twisted off. I do have them but this was intact. It does have the serrated washer. So my 03D did have the plated fasteners. My moldings are with the car or I would check them. Glad I saw the car Mike did or I would have never known

I looked a little more and found the rest of the bolts. Threw them in evaporust to see what's under there! Hard to see in a picture but on the bottom of the washer appears to have some shine

Mike if I hadnt looked over the COPO I wouldnt have known any difference. That was a super nice car. Even my mustang buddy admired the paint.

My observation is zinc if it has moldings. Phosphate if it doesn't. It's shown in AIM Z21 A1....Joe

My car had the optional wheel lip mouldings with dark phosphate fasteners from the factory (just as JohnZ posted)...

My Canadian docs 06A (June 16) RSZ28 with factory mouldings and dark phosphate serrated washer bolts, I think the head markings are all RBW?. I have owned it since 74.

The black RS/Z 04C survivor had zinc plated with serrated washer, there is a running change in the assembly manual, I believe under Z21.
