I would contact TFX. I have used them for close to 20 years. They will tell you what you need to do and are licensed to go from Canada to the US and the other way around as well. http://www.tfxinternational.com/

That makes it much simpler. Importing a US-built car back to the US is pretty easy from what I've heard.
Several discussions on yenko.net, btw.

you might talk to someone like 'Legendary' who sell American cars from Canada back into the states all the time.  I talked to them a year or so ago re a '56 Nomad, and they said it could be done a couple of ways, but that they'd suggest I let them handle all the paperwork, and arrange for shipping across the border...?

What need to be done to purchase and ship a vehicle from Canada?

Call U.S. Customs at the Port of Entry you plan to use, and they'll tell you EXACTLY what you need in order for them to issue an "Informal Entry Certificate" for $5.00, which is the document you take to your U.S. DMV to register and title the car. Ten years ago all you needed was the Canadian Registration (equivalent of a U.S. title) and a Bill of Sale signed by both parties. There are no U.S. taxes or duties involved, and no regulatory issues if the car is over 25 years old, and Canadian Customs aren't involved at all - they don't care what leaves the country - only what comes in.
