White trim tag
« on: May 25, 2015, 12:21:38 PM »
What is the significance of a white trim tag? I've seen this mentioned a couple of times but no real info as to what it means. I have a 67 SS 350 4P car 04 Dec build from Norwood that I'm tracking info on. :-\

BTW, 04 D means 4th week of April build. Not December 4th.

Yep, there were some that were painted white in 67. The tag on my early 68 also seems to have had some white paint on it originally (09C car).

And other years had it as well so it must have been some type of common practice.

It's been said it was done to highlight the data. But why did it go away in 68??

I just always assumed Kurt it phased out since (using the 68 Camaro for example) there really was little information on the trim tag to begin with and JohnZ has mentioned how the plants were pushing employees to utilize the build sheets. But agree it would be interesting to know what happened. Maybe an employee put in the suggestion box to eliminate and the money saved in both time and spray bombs. :)  Talking to one of the retired line workers at MCACN last November he told me he made a lot of money with the suggestion box!

Build sheets were for the Chevy side. The trim tag was for Fisher.

Suggestion system were always suspect. There was a guy that got a max award for changing the keys to aluminum. That was a problem so he got another for changing them back!

To me, that is the most likely logical explanation for being phased out. I can see its use (white paint) as a visual aid for a fast moving manufacturing line. Maybe it was used more as an aid for the PBT inspectors for verifying correctness with body preparation options being it was painted after the firewall blackout.  It's all speculation now.

I'm gonna throw a little more fuel on this fire. I also have an original 06E build from Norwood with the white paint also.

I'm sorry Bryon, I thought everyone knew that "Original"only pertained to 67's. Everything after that is a copy!!   Lol. Just kidding, don't want to offend anyone(even though it's true)

Well the UOIT tag was on every 67 vehicle and was larger and showed the options much clearer than any trim tag.

But I still don't understand your comment.  You said you also have a late 67 Camaro.

Tags with white paint them are known through the 67 model year and even into the early part of the 68 model year.

It seemed to me that there was some question as to when the practice of doing this stopped, so I was just throwing out there that what I consider a late year built 67 to still have this condition on it. Both are Norwood cars. When did they shutdown the plants to switchover to start re-tooling for the 68 line?

Shutdown in 67 was in July, with things switched over to the 68 model year before the end of August.

And there are some early 68 model year cars with the white tag.  My 68, built in September of 67, is one that seems to have had some white paint on the tag originally.  There are also other 68 tags with the white paint.
