1968 396 SS August Los Angeles Production?
« on: May 16, 2015, 12:08:54 AM »
Good evening -

Were any 68 Camaro's produced in August at the Los Angeles plant?

I am looking at a 396 68 SS vin L300504 with a 08E on the trim tag. The holistic and other sites suggest that LA started production in September...

Any input would be appreciated :)

Thanks Paul -

I guess the trim tag is fake...

Have a nice weekend.

Pretty sure I have seen legit 08E 1968 LOS tags before. That could be real, and a nice find if it is.

CRG can confirm if they have early 1968 tags, just wait for someone with data base access to respond.

Would it not be possible for a car to have an August-dated trim tag although the VIN was reported in September.  I owned a Norwood-built '68 with an original 08C trim tag and the VIN 300200.  CRG does not report a month-ending VIN for August, 1967 at either plant but Fisher had to be building bodies before Chevrolet Division could produce cars.

I think the tag may be fine, and seems to line up correctly with the VIN.

I would like to see a better pic of the tag, since I am always a bit skeptical of A A paint codes.

How do other build dates under the hood stack up? e.g. engine build, intake casting date, radiator tag if still there etc.
CNorton, can you post here or pm me a pic of your tag?

Good morning and thank you for the replies!

I have attached what I hope is a better photo of the trim tag as well as photos of the VIN tag, Rear Axle and Engine Pad Stamp.

The rear axle is BZ 2.73 non posi - does this make sense for a big block SS?

Any additional comments would be greatly appreciated :)

Your car should also have a black ash tray and Astro windows. Drum front brakes?

Thanks Victor

It does have a black ashtray & astro windows.

I am checking on the drum brakes - should they be drum or could they be disc?

What axle do you have in your 08D?

Paul

2.73 non posi would be the standard ratio for a non Rally Sport code MY engine.

Drum is standard in 68 for SS Big Block car. Disc would be optional.  http://www.camaros.org/suspen.shtml#Brakes

I  sold the car about 15 years ago and no pictures of the engine compartment exist.  I believe that it was a base V8, manual shift car originally but I have no proof.  There was nothing stock in the drive train since it was a race car when I came into possession of it in 1979.  I raced it in Stock Eliminator from 1979 until 2001  It only had 14,000 on the odometer when I unhooked it.  The tick-roc tach was keeping perfect time until I removed the wiring harness.
