First Gen accelerator cable question
« on: March 29, 2015, 02:58:01 PM »
Years a go I converted my 1968 L6 Camaro to a 327 engine with quadrajet carburetor. At that time I was able to use the 6 cylinder accelerator cable on the new engine but it was a little bit longer than I would like it to be. Also I recently read some where that there is a Nova cable that was used with a 350cid engine that fits a little better than the L6 cable.

So my question -  has anyone been through this that can save me some leg work and trial and error finding a good fitting cable? Did the 68 Camaro use a cable with the V8 engine?

TIA Mike.

It was a hard lever action linkage in 68 on the 327.

Thanks but I the engine is not original and I prefer the cable to the lever. I also think that the hole in the firewall is different between the two versions so it wouldn't be easy to convert.

Do you know if the cable assembly is interchangeable with the lever assembly without altering the firewall?

L6 used cable.
About everything about used linkage.
After several issues with linkages binding, GM switched to cables.
Try an early 70's Nova V8 - similar design with a cable.

Try a Firechicken 400 cable (factory installed that). Friend of mine has a 400/400 car with A/C, cable is flawless.

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions but I'm looking for someone who has already been through the conversion and knows of a cable that will fit. I'm trying to avoid buying two or three cables to find the one that works. There are differences in length and how they attach to the carburetor, firewall, manifold and gas pedal. Nothing is simple.

So far I have come up with GM part 3998632 as fitting early Nova with four barrel carburetor. Can anyone tell me if the Nova cable attaches to the firewall the same as the L6 Camaro cable? Mine is screwed to the firewall.

No I'd prefer the stock look. While the engine is not the original L6 it does look stock under the hood. There are a couple of problems that a Camaro guy would pick up on like the 1967 valve covers and oil filler in a 68 car but most people don't notice that.  I have the stock air filter and exhaust manifolds and for the most part it looks like a stock camaro.

Nova cable attaches to the firewall with one screw. I can take a pic. of the Nova set-up if you need it. The Nova Q-Jet cable will work. The Nova Holley cable has a different end.

Thanks for the confirmation and no need to post a pic. I have it from a few different sources now that it will work so I'm going to order the Nova cable.
