67-69 Bumper Jack Design
« on: March 28, 2015, 02:28:31 AM »
I need your help to determine original bumper jack design differences between NOR and LA built cars.
My car's jack is MIA (no surprise, not much use on a race car) and so I have been trying to source an original 69 Camaro jack mast to fit my 04A build date (so aiming for '9C' on the rivet).
A member on another forum contacted me and stated that LA built cars used a different design jack to NOR cars. He advised that LA cars had a square section jack mast, and had no date stamp. I've only ever noted 1st Gen jacks with a trapezoidal section mast (and corresponding base) and a date stamp on the lever rivet. There has been some previous discussion about markings on the jack bases too, some owners have reported them blank, or with 'U', '69' or 'U69'.

The owner of a survivor early LOS Z/28 (09D of 1968) provided the following pictures of his car's jack, so a square mast design may have been used by at least some LA cars. Also note the end of the mast appears to have a date code ('8J' in this case, which fits with a body plate build date of 09D).

However, one data point alone means nothing, so I need more info from you guys - and photos (especially of the base) would be great! May as well open this up to all three years too.

What I'd like to know is:
Plant: LOS/VN or NOR
Model Year: 67, 68 or 69
Body Plate Build Date:
Jack Mast Section: square or trapezoidal
Jack Base: any letter(s) or number(s) stamped
Mast Date Code: location (rivet or mast) and actual date stamp

So here goes for the car to which the jack pictured below belongs:

Plant: LOS
Model Year: 69
Body Plate Build Date: 09D (1968)
Jack Mast Section: square
Jack Base: nothing stamped
Mast Date Code: mast, 8J

And for the sake of clarity, here's a picture showing a jack base with the trapezoidal mast section (also note it is stamped 'U69'):

Paul, yes I have. But that thread is old, certain links are inactive, and many of the contributors don't seem to be around still to provide all the info in a consistent format, hence why I started this.

Between this post and the old post there will be a lot of really good information.  What would it take to make this a "research project" and get all the information together?  I'm sure it would be a lot easier for everyone to locate the correct information.

Thanks

Maybe there aren't so many cars still with their original jacks intact? Any contributions would be much appreciated though.

I have the base from the L78 but my father broke the jacking mech back many years ago (used to break down tires off rims using the jack and car bumper) and replaced it with one from a 70 or 71 car IIRC..

also no other markings other then UP.  No rust on it, just some rustproof splatter. Looks like an item that tends to be "over restored" I'm still floored what they ask price wise for these things! Used to trip over them in the junk yard. Going to continue it's life on the shelf.

ah..  Thanks Joe..  I've never seen a mast that was dated before, and I totally missed it the first time..  but reading your specific (go back to photo 2).. I found it and now I see and understand.   Is that date code only on the square type masts, or does someone have a trapezoidal mast with such a date code?

Gary, very early days but from the data so far, the NOR cars have trapezoidal masts with date stamped rivets, and the LA cars have square masts with the date stamp on the mast itself. Very interested to see if this is backed up by other owners, but we need many many more contributors.

I find that hard to read/interpret.
Is this better? Organized by date and plant and on one-line:
68
LOS 02C - square, 81 on the mast.  Base - blank.
LOS 02E - square, 8B on the mast.  Base - blank.

NOR 04A - trapezoid, 8C on rivet.  Base - blank.
NOR 04D - trapezoid, 8D on rivet.  Base tbd.
NOR  ? ? - trapezoid, 8D on rivet.  Base n/a.

69:
LOS 09D - square, 8J on the mast.  Base - blank.

NOR 11D - trapezoid, 8L on rivet.  Base U69.  (note: convertible, space saver)
NOR 03B - trapezoid, 9C on rivet.  Base U69.
NOR 08E - trapezoid, 9G on rivet.  Base - blank. VE3 load rest

Yes, much better.  :)

In seconds you can see that so far all the LOS cars have square mast that are dated on the mast, while the NOR cars have trapezoid mast with dates on the rivets.  Also, so far all the LOS cars have blank bases.

Thanks, I am working on the spreadsheet so hadn't sorted the data yet. But maybe that format is clear enough, no point in confusing things unnecessarily.

I'm following this thread with much interest.
I assume the correct length for all 67 - 69 jacks is 32 1/2"?
Also, what about hooks that are stamped on the face side ilo the underside, like in this post, or is face side stamping re-pop?

Here are the jacks from my two 67's. No dates on the rivets but it does exist on the masts.
Interesting how the LOS and NOR differ. The LOS car mast looks to be zinc and the NOR mast looks to be zinc dichromite.

Hi Tim,
The only date on the 05B NOR is on the mast itself and that appears to be CC07.
I don't know if the C is a double stamp to account for it appearing twice.

Interesting difference in the stamping on the load rest.
LOS - 'Camaro 1967' on the same line
NOR - 'Camaro' on one line with '1967 UN' on another line
Both of them stamped on the face side.

Not sure if that CC07 would qualify as a date code, can't really make sense of it, even if the C is a double, though a [maybe late] C is not too far from 05B, just don't understand the 0 in 07
So technically, not a case of 'no date on rivet', as that type of dimpled rivet head doesn't lend itself to having anything stamped on it.
Seems the NOR jack supplier at some stage changed the rivet to a flat head type and started stamping the date code there.

Rob, I have seen other 67 NOR jacks that have a date stamp on the rivet as subsequent years, so maybe this was yet another supplier working to a similar trapezoid design? Let's try and get more 67 info.

Yes, we need more 67 examples either side of 05, both NOR and LOS

On the subject of suppliers, I have read posts by both John and Kurt that suggest there were multiple base suppliers, but not necessarily multiple jack suppliers.

In fact, it may be that there was only the two jack suppliers, one punching out the trapezoidal design that went to NOR and the other punching out the square design that went to LOS, neither of them making the base.
It may also be that considering the safety requirements for such a piece of equipment, that a plant [and the design] needed to be 'certified' in some form or other.
Minimal tooling/assembly is required to punch out bases, there is a lot more tooling and assembly required to punch out masts and ratchets that also conform to a safety standard.

Also read that about the bases. Many other GM models had further different jack designs (for example some Chevelles used a T-section mast and base) and there are subtle differences between otherwise similar mast designs, such as the mast length, and the orientation of the notch in the base recess.
I assumed that these differences were to avoid interchanging model-specific parts over the years, but from a design, manufacture (and now restoration) point of view, it would've been far simpler to have one mast, base and mechanism design, and just have a load rest hook to suit each model. Maybe the accountants intervened and argued cost savings by making each jack model-specific rather than generic!

Is there a patent number on the post shaft, near the top of the tube?

That's the more common base from what I've seen.

Jimmy if you look back at the very first post at the top of page 1, you'll see the data required. Always good to get more to add in - so thanks in advance!

Thanks for the data Mike. I still have to download and re-post all the missing photos from this thread, thanks to Photobucket's recent TOS update, so I'll pick up all the new additions in that update.

I see this topic is old but trying to find a correct jack for the
1967 LOS 02B Sport Coupe

I read through the whole thread and was convinced that all of the LOS cars had square shaft jacks, but then the final list from @KurtS included a LOS 10B car with a trapezoid shaft. Was that a misprint or is this issue not settled?

I am in a similar boat as you but with a 68 LOS car..  I am working through what is and isnt acceptable but not much info out there on the topic currently.  Hopefully reviving this thread will bring in more data points.

Based on this sampling, it appears only square masts were used at LOS after the change from the trapezoidal design was made; sometime between 10B 66 and 04B 67. But there just isn't enough info there to say that with 100% authority. If it were me and I needed a jack for a LOS car built after 01A 67, I'd go with a square mast. Really hard to believe that both weren't used more often at Van Nuys though considering every car produced needed one. There were obviously multiple suppliers, so definitely possible for both type to be used.

I happened to notice this topic and found it interesting.  I noticed on my weekly search on Ebay for "1969 Camaro Original" that this jack was posted, and I figured it might add to the amount of empirical data that has already been gathered.  Like my '69's jack it has a gray jacking mechanism and a black base.  Note the GM part numbers on the box and stickers on the tire iron, and also lack of a date code on the jacking mech.  Would this jack be considered incorrect for an LOS car, and how big of a deal is that...points deduction at a judged show?

My '70 Camaro survivor had its original "Van Nuys" jack and, aside from the obviously different jack hook, appeared to be essentially the same as the '68 jack posted above by "MGreenZ".  It was 32 3/4" tall, had a black painted jacking mechanism, load rest, and hook, and had no date codes or numbers of any kind.  I believe it was made by the Williams Corp somewhere out west.  Like the 1st Gen jacks, it was completely different than a Norwood jack.  It has never made any sense to me why Norwood and Van Nuys would use two different jack suppliers, other than the 2 factories preferred suppliers closer to the respective plants.

This is the jack from my 44k mile original survivor '69 (located in the "Six Cylinder" section).  There doesn't appear to be a date code or part number on the top of the mast.  I don't think the base and jacking mechanism being different colors is all that unusual as I have seen a few examples of this over the years.

BTW, this is the only place on the 'Net that has any of this data for 1st Gen Camaros.  I appreciate the insane amount of work that went into (and continues to go into) this website...thanks!

Plant: NOR
Model Year: 69
Build Date: 05E
Jack Mast Section: Trapezoidal
Rivet Date: "9E"
Jack Base: "U69"
Bumper Hook: "CAMARO 1969 UN"

I've never seen an original black jack base. I'd guess that those are service parts.

Thinking a later replacement base would be marked just U if replaced very late 1969 or 1970 up

So an R&H jack could have a Universal (UN) bracket from the factory?  In my mind seems like a supplier would provide the entire/complete jack assembly, but maybe not the case.

David K refresh my memory - a NOR or LOS car?

Thanks
