My question with this story is this.  What happened to the title from the lending institution?  Did they destroy it or turn it over to the insurance?  That is where I would start first.  Sounds to me like if they can recover the title or verify the amount paid out for the stolen car and Terry Dietrich pays that money back shouldn't she be able to get the car back?

Would make perfect sense in a "Normal" world...the one we all used to live in. But in today's world, faaaaget about it!

Problem is with just about everything these days ,not so much about what is right.

I understand technically she never owned the car because it was being financed ,and with appreciation the water gets pretty murky. But wouldn't it make a good story ?..... Then she rolls it at Barrett Jackson :D

Curious to see who ends up with it. Surprised it wasn't stripped down all those years ago ?

Original owner paid 6 months of payments only.  I would love to buy a car and make only 6 months of payments and still get to own it 42 years later.  What a deal!  Not going to happen.

The insurance company paid off the bank for the whole car.  Who do you think should own the rights to it now?  Just sayin. :)

interesting.

#2 owner of my Z had a Camaro stolen from the pits at the drags.(late 60's) Story goes he actually grabbed onto it as it was rolling away...lost in  history. Probably still a peel car. Anyway, bought the Z slightly used ,some speed goodies+cowl hood at the same dealer and stayed happy until he sold it for a Tr7 in 76. Insurance appeared to pay off.

Did she buy another Vette? Or did she say phooey on those steep payments ?

Apparently, the owner was *paid something* which she agreed to (bank payoff + ??), so at that point in time, the *insurance company* would OWN the car.   If it had been a 'wrecked/damaged/recovered' car, the insurance company would then have ran it thru an insurance sale (auction) and sold it to whomever paid the most...

but.. since the car not recovered quickly, apparently the insurance company either 1) didn't request the title from the bank, or 2) requested it, got it, and lost it in the intervening 42 yrs!.   Can you imagine trying to locate the title?  or getting a 'replacement title' from the state 42 yrs later?  I would imagine this to be about the same as requesting sales paperwork from the dealership that sold your Camaro 42 yrs ago!

I worked for 2 or 3 large companies in my career.  It's infathomable to me, to imagine them maintain/keeping any piece of paper for 42 years and being able to find it even if they did keep it!...   I always had problems just finding a 'Final Report' submitted on contract DAxxxxxxxx, after a couple of years, and that even where the Final Report was the 'deliverable' or sold item, for a multi million $$ contract!

PS.  What's wrong with Phoooey! ???   :)

there is also the statute of limitations to consider. after enough time stolen items can not be recovered. Happened on a big scale a year or two ago when hundreds of paintings stolen by germans during WW2. The courts ruled that the person in possession could keep most of the paintings

For WW2 paintings and Egyptian relics, the trend now is get them returned to their rightful families/countries/museums.

Back to the vette.  So the insurance company owns it, but cannot prove it by producing the title.  Then the state auctions it off like other stolen property.  Does it get a new title and/or Vin? Anyone buy a stolen vehicle from gov auctions and know the process?
