wierd rear multi leaf springs

my brother in law has a 68 firebird with wierd rear springs, I beleive they are three leaf multi springs from the front to just past the rear end then they are mono to the rear shackels. has anyone ever seen springs like these.

Those spring modifications were probably someone's answer to the destructive phenomenon known as "wheelhop," frequently experienced under hard acceleration. They perform the same function as traditional "slapper bars" that bolt under the spring and stiffen it to prevent the front portion of the monoleaf from flexing during drag racing-type launches.  They can be very effective when horsepower levels aren't excessive.  They also have a harshening effect on the ride of the car.
