Need Anti - Burn Check, Ebay smog pump
« on: January 16, 2015, 05:43:53 AM »
Hi All,

I found my perfect dated restored 7801149 smog pump on ebay, needed for my 69 Z.  This pump that i'm interested in is listed as other pumps he has in stock and is not the one for sale.  I could win the auction and he would send my dated pump instead of the one listed.  He has nice photos but does not show the back 7801149 number, and he does not show the stamp pad.  He does list that it is a 7801149.  I emailed him and ask to see photos of the stamp pad and he answered around my questions.  Has anyone dealt with Selloldparts, (John) and had good luck?  Does anyone know of these pumps as restamps?

Thanks,
Bryan

Hi Bryan,

I got my dated smog pump from John several years ago and am happy with it, mine is gutted. No problems with the sale.

You and your seller may already know this but it was news to me at one time.   It is important to be sure the pump is machined for our application.  These smog pumps were used across all the GM lines and they all would have the same casting number on the back of the pump.  The castings are machined differently for different applications.  Example - A Smog pump from a 73 Caddy will have the same general shape and the same "149" casting number on the back of the pump BUT the holes and threaded mounting bosses are not machined the same as the pumps installed on our Chevy engines.  They look very close but will not bolt up.

Thanks Mike, good to hear from you.  Mark , Would the stamp that we know to look for, on the pad, be only on camaro pumps, or does other GM bodies have the same stamp to confuse things even more?  In other words:  When we find our code on the stamp pad, then we have found our pump for camaro's.  ANYONE that knows of other bodies to have the same characters on the stamp pad, please tell us.

The stamp on the machined surface is a date stamp with shift of production.  There is not any way to know what vehicle it was originally installed on from that stamp.  It would be critical to examine all the mounting holes to be sure it would work for you.

I bought and subsequently sold a smog pump for a 351 Ford engine several years ago, a Saginaw pump with the same part number (s) mentioned above on the back, with the middle casting very different from a Chevrolet application just as mentioned above. The reason why I bought it in the first place was the pristine white fan, along with Whittek dated hose clamps still in place on the Ford logo hoses and vacuum canister. A great piece if you're a Ford lover, but obviously used the same manufacturing plant that all of the original parts Chevrolet guys like me lust after. Just FYI -

Bryan,
I've dealt with John and spoken with him personally on the phone (he's in California I believe).  An honest, fare priced and straight guy IMO.  I have his number if needed, I can PM it to you.  The pump was the only original freak'n piece I was missing to my Z and I was able to get a correct Julian dated and de-vaned one from him.  I believe he's from a family that owned an auto salvage yard at one time or still may.  But anyway.. I'd give him a call and just tell him what your looking for.   I was very happy.
