I Also Found That Photo Somewhere On The net, Sometime Back. It Always Intrigued Me . Looking At The Paint Job On The Car, Is There A Canadian Connection ? Some Where In It's Life ? I See From What You Have As A log, It Raced Mostly In The States. Or Is It Like The Dick Jordan GT 350 R ? It Had A Green Leaf Logo On The door, as Part Of The Paint. Perhaps Someone Just Liked The Look.

Eric, I also think that's the only vintage shot that I have of the car. It might be kind of fun to run your car's VIN through the Vintage Vehicle Services offered by GM Canada. It could tell you if the car was sold new in Canada and what part of the country it was from. I don't know anything about the original driver but it would be good to know if he was a Canadian or American racer.

Thank you. I think EARL HURLBUT was american. The car was purchased new at a GM showroom in Rome, NY.
I haven't found any Canadian connection so far.

Don Davidson Motors in Rome, NY?  Did you get that information through the NCRS Muscle Docs service?

I Ran The Picture And Info Past A Historical Group, I Belong To Here In Canada. So far The Only Two Things That Came up, Was That Earl Hurlbut Was S.C.C.A. N.E. Division Executive Steward In 2011.  Chip Boatright, Works For Or Owns GSB Realty In Mundelein Illinois. If They Still Hold These Positions ? ? This Might be Something Your Already Aware Of.

There was an Earl Hurlbut who raced a Corvette in the 1977 Watkins Glen 6 Hour sharing with Bob Baechle (#64 gold car pictured). The entry list has both drivers from New York.

Maybe the same guy?

Wow, who doesn't love a gold race car?  :D

Eric, I sent you an email with the contact info for Earl Hurlbut and Chip Boatright (provided to me courtesy of Vince Howlett). Hopefully you are able to connect with them and they can fill you in on the early history of the car. Good luck!

You're welcome.  I wonder if it turns out there is some racing history before Earl Hurlbut owned it.

It seems it had been prepared as a TA spec car from the beginning in 1967/68 but the first owner did not finish the car and it was then sold to Hurlbut in 1971 who finished the car the car and raced it.

Is this something you found out by speaking with Earl Hurlbut or was it information that came with the paperwork that accompanied the car when you purchased it?

I have had the chance to speak with Chip Boatright and exchange few emails with Earl Hurlbut. He purchased the car from the first owner in 1971. It had been prepared to TA specs from new in 1967 but never finished. Earl finished the car in 1972 and raced it at Mosport, Canada, hence the leafs on the car. Then it raced at Lime Rock, Watkins Glen, Blackhawk, Mid-Ohio, Indianapolis, ...

Earl recalls he had been champion in 1976 (probably SCCA Regional ???) with the car. He thinks he still has some period pictures and will try to send them to me.

Thanks for your help.

Got Some Feedback From The Historical group Here in Canada, Can't Add Images ! So I'll Quote "There Is A Possibility This Is A Doug Duncan Built Car. His Logo Was "Red Leaf Racing" On A Red Maple Leaf Background And Was Known To Have Built Race Camaro's Other Than The Gorries/TG/Fisher/Penske Car. Note That I Wrote "Possible" Not Probable, Not Knowing For Sure....Cheers Craig "

Every Little Bit Of Info Helps !  Mike (group/7) in Canada

Wow, thank you Mike.

How could we get further with the potential Doug Duncan connection ?

Earl Hurlbut bought the car in 1971 from Neil Kassel who lived in Syracuse, NY, obviously not so far from Canada.

Hey isn't that Orange triangle a slow moving vehicle sign, as seen on farm equipment? ;)

Doesn't some racing groups require rookies or the slower class cars when multiple classes are running together, to run those alerts?  to alert faster drivers that this car might not be moving out of the way fast enough? or ??  :)

I remember that if you were a new novice racer in Ontario, and maybe in other provinces, that you were required to display the triangle sign, to warn the senior drivers
that you were just a rookie.  You had to wear the triangle for the required 3 novice races before being eligible for a senior license.  Not sure if that is still the case.

So, do we know who the first owner was, who did not complete the car?

Yes, the first owner was Harold Becicwith who purchased the car from a dealer in Rome, NY. He started to build the car into a Transam racer but never finished.
The second owner was Neil Kassel, Syracuse, NY who seemed to only briefly own the car to resale it to Earl Hurlbut in 1971 who finished the car and first raced it in Mosport in 1972.

The correct spelling of the first owners name is Harold "Hal" Beckwith.

Earl Hurlbut just kindly sent me some period pictures he has found.
He confirmed : "The # 531 photos are from my first school and win at Mosport in Canada in the Spring of 1972.  Later that year, I began competing in the U.S. and affixed the Maple leaf décor to honor the Canadian experiences."

He doesn't recall any connection with Doug Duncan.

Very cool, Eric. Great to see more pics of the car from its early history and that's a nice treat be be able to talk directly with the guy who originally raced it.
