15" X 7" Rallys clear everything on a '68
« on: January 07, 2015, 05:54:52 AM »
Will 15" X 7" Rally wheels clear everything on my '68 Camaro at stock height? Want to have an extra set, then put on originals for shows etc.
The tires are P265/50SR15 Dunlop GT Qualifier Radials. What say you?... Danny

Danny,
I deceided to keep you company! I would guess that the responses are few becuse there are a few factors to consider, Easy answer is yes. however not all 265.50.15's are the same size, stuffed wheels look awsome stopped but not always good for daily driving. If the springs/bushings are weak/sagging there will be lots of side shift causing rubbing to the inside of the fender wells. a full tank or passangers will lower your car a couple of inches. I have 295 50 15's euro T/A's tucked in my 68 with un-cut wheel mouldings (Multi-leaf springs with Anson ground grabbers,- bolt is in) The rims are 15 x 8 with a 4.5" back space. The only rub I have had was a bad dip on the 405 freeway at high speed. They must have rubbed the tops of the fender wells as there was no markings on the tires. Hope this helps.

My answer would be:

"The wheels themselves will fit fine, but you'd better check the tires if you go with large sizes like this..."   :)

Ok,
I figured it wasn't a slam dunk. And thank you men for getting me started. I will decide what to do. Don't even know if they are still for sale... D

I used to rum FW rally wheels on my 68 years ago before I restored it. I had no problems with the wheels. You might find a p series tire that would have the same rolling diameter as the E70-15 with the correct width....Joe

One factor for sure as many have advised is the tire size especially in the front as tire will rub when turning hard left or right. Old school but I still like the nostalgia look of slim wheels in the front and then the larger 15X7 or even a 15X8 with a larger tire if it fits in the back.
Have fun and know you are!

Jano,
225/60/15 all around. No rubs!  ( JonZ68)---take a look :D  I like.

Currently I have 255-70R15's in the rear ( fills well nice with no interference) 195-70R15's in the front. on the original DF's. Slight rake ,liked the look. Never was a fan of those huge meats sticking out the wheel wells. Don't like tubbed cars. (mini tubbed are cool!)

My slick is a MT  28x9x15 on 8" rally.  no rubs. (posted wrong size on another thread)

The 215/65-15 is about as close as you're going to get to the original E70-15 size appearance-wise; the E70 was 26.4" in diameter, and the 215/65 is 26.0". My all-original '69Z (stock springs) had 235/60-15 T/A's on it when I bought it, and both fronts rubbed at 12 o'clock. I swapped them out for a set of 215/65 T/A's, and no more rubbing.

Metric to Standard Result:
195/70/15 = 25.7x7.7/15         me fronts
265/50/15 = 25.4x10.4/15       your tires of interest
255/70/15 = 29.1x10/15          me rears

235/60/15 = 26.1x9.3/15          rubbed per John Z

215/65/15 = 26x8.5/15             John Z running now

225/60/15 = 25.6x8.9/15        JonsZ68 (white 68 SS clone/tribute...nice car, reports no rubs)

a few numbers to ponder

One advantage of 15x7 wheels, besides their width compared to your 15x6's, is their availability.   The 15x7  Rallye wheels (FW code) were used on Monte carlos etc through the '70's and are much easier to find, and MUCH cheaper to buy... :)

True Gary and there were a lot of 15X6 service replacement wheels made (70's & 80's) also that of course do not have a DF stamp and can be purchased fairly inexpensive.
