Craigslist finds part II
« on: December 22, 2014, 05:53:11 PM »
So I followed up with the craigslist ad from Paul (1968RSZ28) for this 32 buick with a 302. I emailed Keith and he just sent me some pics of the block. It is a 3956618 block,  with a VO125DZ stamp on it.

The picture he sent was not great, but I would think original. Supposedly the original yellow Z that this engine came with got in a pretty bad accident that ripped off the front of the car back in 1970, so it was scrapped. But the motor with low miles it was dropped into the buick. Keith said the motor turns over by hand, and they had picked up some points for it and wee going to try to fire it in the next month or so. SO  If someone is looking for a date correct block, maybe you can negotiate a reasonable price for it. He is asking $8500, and says it has the original distributor, pulleys and balancer. I have his number if someone wants to send me a PM.

Does Keith know the partial VIN?  It should be pretty easy to see in a '32 Buick.

I asked him, but he did not know, and judging by the pic he took of the DZ stamp, a pic may not be helpful. He said he will be around it in the next week, so just to see what the vin is may be worth giving him a email or call

Where in Alabama is the engine and car, Austin?   If it's not very far from me, I could go take a look and get some photos and information...

That the same motor "69Zee" was looking at in November he might have some information on it.

A friend and I spent the day today 'junking'.. hit some old country junkyards, spent a few hours 'searching' for some cars we had received a 'tip' on.. but unfortunately couldn't find these very special cars.. then we went thru Arab AL and visited a classic car dealer there, that was unfortunately closed, but we could see many nice cars (very highly priced) thru the plate glass windows, then we wandered thru a couple of hundred 'classics' packed into the yards around the dealership.. After that I called the owner of the 32 Buick with the DZ302 and the '40 Ford and asked to pay him a visit.. which we did.

The 32 Buick with the DZ302 motor (driving a Turbo400 trans), and the '65 Corvette IRS was priced at $18,500.   The body on the Buick is VERY solid everywhere with some metal damage on the LR fender area.  The 40 Ford wasn't as good body wise, as there were an area or two that had suffered bad repair.  It had the original '40 suspensions, trans, and rear, but had an engine transplant from a '56 Chevy (265 2 bbl).

THE 302 engine in the Buick, appeared to be a *real DZ 302* from a '69 Z28,  Assembly date (V0125DZ) - VIN stamp on the block side above the oil filter (I took a pix but the light was very poor so most photos didn't turn out good).  Heads (I only removed one valve cover - which had drippers) was a '186' head dated A 3 9, which seems appropriate for the 25Jan engine assembly date.  The intake was the Winters 2472.  Carb was a '4346 from a big block - with front vented bowl.  The exhaust manifolds are (2.5" ramshorns) from '64-'65  Corvette.  I 'think' the Distributor is likely an original one from the 302, although I could not check the numbers.   The Alternator had a '69 upper bracket, but the Alt itself was an '834'.  Under the valvecovers looked clean, oiled, and good considering 30+ yrs stored away.  They said the engine spun with the starter (a '1968 date -if late '68 might be factory orig for the engine?).

They said they didn't want to separate the engine from the car at this point, although if someone wanted the Buick body/chassis, they probably should sell it and separate the engine parts for separate sale (that was my advice to them).

To me, the value just crashed. Not original carb, alt, valve covers, etc...
Got a pic of the front pad?

I took a photo, but in the poor light and dirty pad, it didn't come out very well...

Sounds like a fun day, in the bone yards, seeing a real DZ motor transplant.

Sounds like what I would do before I had kids.....

Yep..  left at 9 am..  got home at 5:30.. drove a couple hundred miles..  Found an old junk yard I'd forgotten all about (owner in the '70's wouldn't sell anything).. He's died, his son now has it.. and all the cars are still there and mostly whole (50's and 60's.. a few '70's).. several hundred of them.  Some *looked* good, but probably all rusty on the bottom...
