Trying to reunite the shortblock with it's car.    VIN is 9Nxxx007

http://desmoines.craigslist.org/pts/4799006246.html

The ad reads :
Don't get too excited. I was able to get the original engine to my Z and I am passing my old spare shortblock on. I want to try to reunite this with it's original car if it still exists. Partial VIN is 9NXXX007. Pad is V0310DZ. Cast C-4-9. I got this 25 years ago from a local car guy who worked at a Chevy dealer in SW Iowa when these were new. He said the car came in for warranty work and the shortblock was swapped out due to a spun rod bearing. This is just as it was, it hasn't been rebuilt, but it has been stored in a heavy plastic bag and isn't all rusty. Anyway, he somehow got this out the back door. I wasn't there, don't debate with me that it was unlikely, I don't care. Now - contact me ONLY if you own this car, or know where this car is. To get this you must provide airtight proof. I want a photo of the VIN tag, at least 1 hidden VIN and the title. If you can complete the VIN, prove it still exists and prove it's yours, we will work something out. Email only at this point.

How would someone prove they own a car that the vin ends in 007, must only be several thousand of them in that time frame, would have been better off with the front half  or front 4 of the vin.

Should have given the first 3 because with a pad date of 0310 you can figure the whole vin would be 615007

How many of them are Z-28s ?    I have the numbers and if they do too and can prove it then it's a match.   How do you prove it ?   That's all in the ad.   Too many emails to sift through, I guess we will see.

Sorry, that's not it.   In reality that leaves 999 possible combinations and how many of them were Z-28s ?     Knowing it's a March / April car knocks that down by over 1/2 of that.   With a VIN of 007 that would stand out more than the first 3 numbers.

I hope that is what jogs somebody's memory.   I had a guy, Brian I think, said he was from this site email me thinking he might know the car.  He said its been a dragster forever.  Somebody else contacted me with the right vin, but no contact since.   I don't trust craigslist email, so I'm hoping either the guy with the number or the guy from here sees this and gets back ahold of me.    If not, I'll keep trying or haul this thing to the junk.

Why the secrecy on the entire partial VIN, if you'd require proof of car's identity before selling the block, and then make the throw-away comment that you'd junk it if the current owner doesn't appear?
If the original car is long gone, as the owner of another Z you must realise that block still has solid value to the right buyer as NOM but date and suffix-correct, that is of course if it's as described.

I suppose your right.   If I get proof then it doesn't matter if everyone knows the vin.   Ive never done this before and I was trying to be careful.   Too many cheats and thieves in the car business so unless somebody had the right numbers I wouldn't know if they were legit.   I also wanted it to be private between the owner and me not plastered all over the internet any more than it needs to be.   Does that make sense ?     I hope I don't regret this but the vin is 9N627007.

Hmm, could this be the block that goes to this former race car discussed on the Yenko site???

http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/586453/4

Of corse there is a mystery surrounding the cars vin and trim tag, so the block now turning up may not help matters.... :P

Nice catch Austin...I wonder if this will help to solve the mystery of the "Hog Wild" trim tag. Earlier in this thread I threw out that based on the pad date the vin might start with start with 615. Looking at it again 615 might be early but 616 or 617 makes way more sense then 627. I spent a little time researching early March DZ motors when I was trying to figure out what date my 3B vin 614xxx should have. My best guess for my car ended up being 0304. By vin 617xxx DZ dates were already 0312. From my admittedly small sample seems to me a vin of 627007 should have a motor somewhere around 0325. For instance vin 627703 is 0325. Hmmm indeed...

I want to thank whoever contacted the guy with the car, he sent me a message and it looks like a done deal.   He is only a couple hours away, so I just might deliver it and see the car to make sure.   Thank you for your help.   Merry Christmas to you all.

I couldn't have made the match until you posted the whole VIN.

So thank you.

So CRG thats another orphan that found an original body. What do we have like 5 to 10,000 of the original 20,302 Z cars left to go?
