I have owned this car since 1988, orig motor was missing when I bought it. But I am 100% sure it was a big block car orig from the factory, 90% sure the trans and rear end are orig to the car.

M21? Are you sure?
Do you know the trans or axle codes?

Thanks!

Car is in storage I will have to try and get the both the codes off the trans and axle, I have a spare muncie and I am almost sure when I did research on what I had in the car and what I had for a spare, one was a M20 and the other was a M21.
I will update as soon as I can

Ok I have a small update for my car, I was incorrect and it does NOT have a M21 but infact is a M20, it has 2 rings on the input shaft
I dug this out of my storage area and it looks to be the matching transmission to the car VIN is 124378N378371 and the trans has stamping numbers 18N37837, also has P8A15 stamped on it
case has a 3925660 casted on the side, tailshaft has 3846429 casted on it, the side cover has a metal tag that I could not make exactly the numbers on it but looks to be 3915077

Extension housing ( tail shaft) for 1968 is # 3857584.  Colvin, page. 285 - 286.

The side cover has a metal tag that I could not make exactly the numbers on it but looks to be 3915077

3915077...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ORIGINAL-69-1969-OLDSMOBILE-OLDS-442-MUNCIE-M-20-M20-4-SPEED-TAG-3915077-/161471406657?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2598722241&vxp=mtr

From eBay listing...

"Up for sale is an ORIGINAL 1969 Olds 442 Muncie 4 speed tag. This is GM part# 3915077 and is correct 1969 442's & Cutlass's with M-20 Muncie transmission. This is the tag came off of the side cover.  This is a hard one to find so do not miss out!!!"

There might be other applications too.  ???

quote from a user on another site on the metal tag 3915077  http://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/306322/2

That's a Muncie 4spd. wide ratio 2:52:1 as well.
Used originally in:
*1968 Passenger series w/8.15 X 15 tires w/3:55 axle AND when 396cid or 427cid. equipped.
*1968 Corvette w/o Posi or 3:55 axle.

And Recommended replacement in:
*1965-67 Passenger & Corvettes when NOT close ratio equipped.
*1965 Corvette w/o Spcl. Hi-Perf or Fi.

It was soon superceded in 1970 by Muncie #3964507 for same applications.

The trans confirms that the car is an SS.
What's the axle code? Part #'s on the engine frame mounts?

I thought the extra letter "E" was strange and the 3.31 ratio seamed much lower numericaly than I would have guessed, it used to have a 4.10 gear in it when I bought but I guess that was added later on

The "E" is the positraction manufacturer code, and when applicable, is added on a second line.  The posi manufacturer codes are D for Dana, E for Eaton, and W for Warner.

Ok I read that writeup but somehow I missed about the D,E and W for the carrier type and being on the second line,  thanks for explaining that!

The axle and trans look original. No question the car was an SS.
What proof of the BB? Engine frame mount #'s?

is the engine mount numbers on the front side or back side? I gotta believe its going to be tough to see them with the headers. It does have a big block heater core, had a factory big radiator in it, pretty sure the big blocks sit slightly to the passenger side also.
Its for sure a orig RS also, back in 88 I bought GM brand new quarters, fenders and a rear tail piece and the holes and wirings were all factory for the reverse lights, came with all the vacuum tanks and actuators still mounted, but had to change the actuators to operate the doors. Everything worked perfect for a couple years after the restoration until the cheap aftermarket color coded vacuum lines started cracking and leaking haha

The deluxe interior is all original and perfect except for the headliner and rear speaker deck. the headliner was only changed because a smoker in the rear seat decided to poke there cigarette threw the head lineer  :(  The carpet still has a tag stapled on it but its not a GM name on it, been a while since I looked at it but its dated 1967 and the car is a January build so I know its factory

I honestly doubt the 3846429 tailhousing on the transmission is original, but that's not a big deal.  Could have been replaced.

Rest of the transmission sounds original. I did not see the transmission stamped information pic?

Metal tag is correct for 1968 Camaro, M20, 3.07 and 3.31 rear axle.  (AIM says M20 with L34, L35, L48)

I tried looking for the numbers on the motor mounts but I am pretty sure those numbers are on the bottom and I can't see them so I will have to post them one day in the future. The car in the next year or two will be coming apart again for a freshening up and new paint amazing how they deteriorate after 25 years even sitting in the garage and driven very little.
