Earliest vin by the oil filter.
« on: September 12, 2014, 04:08:27 PM »
Just wondering what the earliest date for the vin to be down by the oil filter. My 11B Camaro has it at that location. the ground down a spot to stamp it. very clear stamp and I know it is the original engine.

I'd like to see that too..  I haven't seen an *original* stamp on that cast surface that was ground down first...  of course anything is possible.   It would also be good to see all the other evidences that the engine is original to the car.. ie.   casting/assembly dates, casting numbers, transmission stamping, etc...

My 12A L78 original block is stamped on the pad; the 12B L78 spare block I own is stamped above the oil filter. In between those two build weeks, I would guess. Dunno if it would differ between small or big blocks - I severely doubt it.

By the way, the location of the cast date codes on these two "272" blocks differs as well - one is above the pan rail on the side of the block, one is above the bellhousing flange at the upper rear of the block. Just thought I'd throw that in -

I know a guy with a September of 1968 LOS-assembled Z that has the partial by the oil filter, partial is 19L502xxx and engine assembly is 0915. LA stamps varied between the 2 locations a fair bit though, so I suspect you're asking about Norwood cars?

Yessir. In fact, the car it came out of is listed in Jerry's Definitive '69 book. Both blocks are Norwood - I understand Van Nuys was a little erratic in their execution of the stamping locations. Norwood apparently was more consistent once they made the changeover.

It is an LA Camaro. A numbers matching 1969 LM1 RS, 350 with 350 tranny, 12 bolt. I bought it from the original owner who got it when she got out of High school.

My old 69 LM1 had the vin by the oil filter but it was so faint I could never snap a pic of it, new owner might be doing that this winter when he takes it out.  Its a 10d (x164)  LOS built car.  Original RS with 350 Qjet, TH350 tranny and 12 bolt rear end, fold down rear seat, pwr front disc brakes, vinyl top.
