I recently purchased a 69 RS Z28 "clone". The # on the block reads "V093DZ". I am sure the car is not a Z28 but could this be a 302 block?

Well, there's a digit missing from the date, so that should throw up a flag.  Pictures are worth a thousand words, especially on stamps and trim tags.

There's no such thing as a "302 block" - 302's used the same 350 block as millions of other Chevy cars and trucks; just had different crank, rods, and pistons installed in it. If the question is "is this a real DZ-stamped block?", probably not, especially with a 3-digit date stamp.

I did not phrase that correct.  I guess what I meant to ask is could this "motor" be a 302 with that casting #. It appears that I did not get all of the #'s so I will look a little harder. From what I read on the CRG website, the DZ would indicate a 302. FYI I believe that the 302 is a 327 block with a 283 crank according to CRG.

Guys,

I have looked again and I can not be sure if there is another # or not. After looking again it appears to read V0913DZ. Is there somewhere else I can look besides down by the oil filter? I am new to all of this and am trying to learn as much as possible. Please pardon any dumb questions that I may ask. Thanks for the help!

Unbolt the alternator (unbolting the bracket can be easier) and snap a pic of the #'s. That will tell us a lot more.
Also, the casting # on the rear of the block would be helpful.

Alan,no such thing as dumb questions.If the engine is still in the car it might be tricky to see the casting #.look behind left hand head on the block.

Alan, take the inspection cover off of the bellhousing. If the crank flange has a single v-notch it is a 302 crank. One clue to look for.

Whats the VIN and the build date (trim tag code) on the car?  Could be a real early or real late car.  Since you know of the V0.... code on the engine pad, I'm guessing there is no VIN in the same area, which would lead to it being a late car.

Like mentioned earlier, the casting # on the back of the block would help also.  If theres a VIN near the oil filter area, it will most likely be very tough to read, especially with the engine in the car.

Also, what is the trim tag info?

im new to all this as well but from what ive found the 302-327-350 were all the same block no matter how you slice it.  3970010 on the back drivers side of the block could designate any one of those motors.  The best way i found to see this was to take a drop light and lay it back by the distributor and then put your head around the brake booster.  It gave me the clearest view of the casting without removing anything.

Ruh-roh.
Block doesn't match the tag which doesn't match the VIN.
That's not good. One of the tags has been swapped. Can you find the partial VIN (see http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#PartialVIN)?

I will check the partial VIN again. Can you tell me a little more about where the conflict is in the #'s is. I know the engine is not original but I am confused about the tag issue.

Unable to read all of partial VIN. All I can make out is 9N685???. The rest of the #'s are not legible.

At least it appears the VIN is on the original car.
VIN is from Sept 69, tag is Dec 68. The trim tag came off of a different car.

Now here's the twist. That engine could be original to the VIN.
Harder to prove without the trim tag, but....
Three things first: get me a pic of the pad and I'll take a look at it.
Is there a VIN by the oil filter?

From what I can read the axle code is BG0219G2 with an E under it. Casting date, I think, is B79. I will  get you a picture of the tag in the next couple of days. The VIN by the Oil Filter is not legible. Trans reads PNM22.

BG isn't a good 69 axle code. BS? But that axle isn't original to either the tag or the VIN. Is it a 10 or 12 bolt?

The picture of the pad will help. And the VIN by the oil filter is the key evidence that's missing. It is hard to see in the car.....

The N in the trans code should be a number. No VIN stamped near that code?

Nope - the last '69 build week was 11A (November), and his 12A tag doesn't belong on that car - it's been swapped from a December '68-built car.
