Help determining 67 4P scenario
« on: August 24, 2014, 05:09:48 PM »
Need help trying to figure out if my 1967 SS/RS Camaro was originally a L30/M20 (327), SS (350), Z28 (302), or 396.   I'm stuck in the 4P scenario
where Fisher hadn't started using the individual codes yet.  I've read most, if not all, of the links on CRG concerning this subject.
I bought the car as a drag racing car.   The previous owner said it started out drag racing in Bakersfield in the 1970's or 80's.  None of the
original drivetrain is available, but the 454 engine and Rear end have some work done to them that makes me believe maybe it was a semi-pro (or
higher) car vs amateur (pure speculation on my part).   I had always thought the car had been wrecked in the front end, and was probably converted
to a drag car very early, because it seemed like the front end body wasn't consistent with an SS/RS (Ex. doesn't have the correct blinker cutout for
a rally sport, but does have the correct separate rear backup lights, Hood has red under painting and not SS, etc).
I'm trying to find an older picture of the cowl trim plate, and will upload once I do.  I spray painted it before I started looking up the codes,
making it hard to read.  Hey, it was a drag car :)  I've enclosed a picture of the plate, and a "pencil over-marking" for easier reading.  Here is
what I see.

02B      I653
6712637 LOS-16516
765-Z      F-F
WL  2LGU  3DL
4P  5Y

02B       - Feb 1967, 2nd week (Feb 5-11th)
I653       - Expected body assembly date - end of 2nd week, or 3rd week of Feb (up for interpretation)
67-12637   - Chevry, Camaro, Custom Interior, Coupe
LOS      - Los Angeles (Van Nuys)
16516   - Consistent with Body Number Thread C, Coupe with Custom Interior
765-Z   - Custom Bucket Seats, Black Interior, E interior Paint Code, Standard A60 Strato Bucket Seats (no headrest)
F-F      - Marina Blue/ White Stripe (no vinyl Top) - I see mostly Marina blue where ever the paint has chipped on this car.

WL      - Tinted Windsheild Only, Folding Rear Seat
2LGU      - 4 Speed Manual, Console Front Compartment, Tape Play (8 track)
3DL      - Lamp Courtesy (Coupe-only underdash lights), Rally Sport Package
4P      - evidently SS350, or L30/M20, or early Z28, or 396 (from reading these blogs)
5Y      - Belts All Deluxe

VIN - 124377L141237

http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag185/rsd1992/20140824_094408_zps2af88be0.jpg

A few more items.
1.  It has the mounting plate for the torsion bar (4P code).  The rear end is a 12 bolt out of a 1968 camaro, so not the original.
2.  It has the SS interior doorpads, and padding for a fold down seat (1L - A67).
3.  Speedometer Cable holes - This is a mystery.  I welded up the holes, from the firewall side.   Best I can tell, from the inside, is both holes

were punched at the factory (ugggh).   I have another 1967 RS camaro that has just the Saginaw hole punched, but not the Muncie hole (as a point of

reference).   Not sure if I'm seeing this wrong, or if the factory may have punched both holes by accident.
4.  VIN and Cowl trim plate seem consistent with each other.
5.  Looks like there are holes for a proportioning valve on the subframe, drivers side. But there are two holes vs 1.

Here is where I am logically
1.  Speedometer cable hole - if it was one or the other, I could determine if it was L30/M20 by just having Saginaw hole.  Only the Muncie hole, and
it could be SS350, Z28, or 396.  But, I have both.
2. Proportioning Brake valve holes - There are two horizonal holes under drivers door on subframe.  Not sure if these are factory or not.
Definitely FW w/o AC.  So not much help.
3. Seems like, with the early 02B date code, there could be some question on the use of the 4P2L code.   From the public information, I think I'm
stuck.  I either need to maybe do some research into previous owners and try to get some original documentation, or maybe CRG has some information
in their database that can help at least eliminate some of the options.

Thanks for all your help in advance.

All 1st gens had the cowl punched for the standard speedo cable routing. It was plugged for Muncie applications.

William....thanks....that helps a lot.   That means I should be able to eliminate L30/M20 from the list!   My guess is that it's a SS/RS 350, but would still like to eliminate Z28 or 396 if possible.

Here are a few shots of the holes, from the inside (vs the firewall side).

Non-Muncie Hole - please remember I welded this shut from the firewall side....but you can see the edge of the hole most of the way around.

An L35 396 would be 4N; too early for L78. No known 4P Z/28s out of Van Nuys.

I can't tell from the picture of the hole in the Muncie hole area whether it is original or not.

Heater core should tell if it's a BB. What about the tire pressure decal?

William....Thanks for the info!!  Wow....I'm really surprised there were no 4P Z28s out of the Los Angeles plant, since racing was huge down there at that time.

bcmiller....I'll try to get a better picture tomorrow.   I think some of the lighting was at an angle, and with the welding and melted paint, it's hard to tell.  Also, it's been a drag car for a long time.  I've had the car 15 years.  I'd be surprised if anyone was trying to fake both the Muncie and backup light hole by drilling them out.

moroman....Unfortunately, I don't have the heater core or the tire pressure decal.  I tried looking it up...is the firewall where the heater assembly was bolted the same for small block and big block?  It's just the core/assembly itself that is different?

I didn't state there were none. At this time, none are known.

The fire wall heater cut out WILL be different for a A/C car. (bigger, shape) If it has a A/C cut out it was not a Z or L78.

A BB had a larger 3/8" fuel line ID and an offset for the transmission cross member mounting bolts.

Hmm...I thought SB used a 5/16" line from tank to pump and the BB was 3/8". Maybe I am getting confused with the BB fuel line routing and the way it is secured by a retainer on the front frame then. I knew something is different with the BB fuel line.

FWIW......here is a better picture of the Muncie hole, different angle and lighting (from inside).
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag185/rsd1992/BetterMuncieHole_zps23eca19d.jpg

Here is a picture of the heater cutout, non-AC (from inside).
http://i1368.photobucket.com/albums/ag185/rsd1992/HeaterCutout_zps8c62486e.jpg

Thanks for all the great info!!!  ;D   Unfortunately, I don't have many of the original parts (no heater core, no fuel lines or tank, etc).   Mostly just the body, steering wheel/box, subframe, and some interior parts.    This is a running street car now (just), and wondering how I should proceed in the restore.   If it's really rare (Z28), maybe worth it to do a full restore; if it's a SS/RS 350, just honor what it was....but don't get too crazy.   Out of historical interest, I may try to find some of the previous owners.   Maybe someone knows where the original parts are, or has some documentation.

It appears to be an RS/SS350.  Not a Z and not a BB.

The codes used depended on the plant.  Plenty of Z's made in LA.
