Found Some More Pics of the Green L78
« on: August 24, 2014, 04:30:25 PM »
These were all taken April of 68 which the first week of April was when my father took ownership of the car.  As for the whole debate on the gloss vs satin vs semi gloss tail panels..  I was always on the semi or satin side until I found these pics.

The first pic is the last from April 1968.  The other 2 are from June 11th 1978

Your dad would be proud, the car still looks great. Question, do all BB SS cars sit that high? It looks like from the early pics it sat high,( higher than any other model 68 camaro). Also did you add the passenger side mirror or your dad? How many sets of wheels did your dad have on that car? It seems every new pic you find has a different set of rims on it. Its funny your dad kept the car in cherry condition, and it seems just freshened it up every couple years with new wheels.. :)

Well as far as I know there has been the original steel wheels, keystones, some unknown mag wheel, Cragars, & rallyes..  I still have the Cragars, rallyes & a set of AR wheels (never were on his car but I plan on running them some) that I am currently running on my 67.  The mirror, spoilers & chrome on the doors & fender wells were added by him.  He bought the car with one thing in mind; which was drag racing.

I noticed your Dad painted the front suspension pieces white - a former owner of my '9 Z did the same thing, before 1973. I guess it was the "thing" - saw a lot of gasser-style 55-57's back then painted the same way.

I spray-bombed mine black not long after I bought the car - at the very least, it helped protect the A arms a lttle bit. When I beaded them back in the early 80's - no pits, minimal rust.

Car looks great - I'm sure it will look even better in the near future -

Thanks guys.  The only reason I am the person I am and the vehicles I now own; directly or indirectly is due to my father.

Steve yes he sure did.  The POP shows he signed the paperwork on the 4th of April and in less than a month he had already started making changes and personalizing it.  I was actually giving it a tuneup and oil change today and while I was under the car I could still see the old paint in some of the hard to see places.  Set the timing at 33 degrees total (started to ping a little when I went higher but hadnt ran a full tank through the car yet), dwell at 30 & NGK plugs with 110 octane..  Definitely a world of difference..  Also cleared up the hesitation I was having off idle as well.

I also ran across some other pics of some local cars.  See if you remember some of these..

On a side note:
If anyone is looking into oils to run that has the correct amount of zinc (over 1500ppm) & phosphorus (over 1300ppm) go with Brad Penn Grade 1 Oil..  From my research they have a great reputation and it is 100% USA MADE.

Pretty car, the Pace Car...who owns it now ?

Air shocks in the back of the green one ? I think higher up was in ,Gassers? Anyway a little higher rate spring up front helped with weight transfer.(you know this DW) However, my Z springs were cut prior to 76, and helpers were placed between the coils to correct a ,putting it nicely, mistake. I put a little stiffer rate in the front of mine when I replaced them. With the 90-10's car hit hard and launched good. Does sit high though, as the rear end..still, and it's all original back there. Different thread but how's the motor coming along ?

Pace car was sold back in 2001.  I can not remember the guys name.

No air shocks.  He didnt get them until July of 68.

Engines coming.  Got the coated cam bearings installed and the crank is back in the block.  Still need to finish the other head and get a set of rings and back together it goes.

Steve

He ordered it from Glasscock Chevrolet in Willoughby, Ohio

For some reason I was thinking it went out west..  Glad it stayed at least somewhat close.  You can also see Ron and Diane's X44 Z in the back ground.  lol

Thanks, I was straining to read the plate frames. I live in Northeast Ohio and have not seen or heard of this dealer. I'm always on the lookout for dealer stuff, esp from Ohio.

There was no dealer emblem on the car.  Just the license plate frames.  He also bought a new 66 SS Chevelle from a dealer in Painesville.  My parents lived in Mentor until 1971-72.  Eventually calling Lebanon, TN home in 1974-75.  If you run across a Glasscock frame I would definitely be interested in it.

Bet the dealer in Painsville was Earl Evans....They ran a 69 Copo Camaro raced by Dale Evans. It was raced under the name Steppenwolf. I have a slew of pics I can post if interested...

That sounds right.

WOW small world..  When you said Steppenwolf I called my mother and confirmed with her.  My father bought the 427 out of the Steppenwolf car.  She said it was Mr Evans son.  I said was it Dale Evans and she said; you know I believe that is right..  He put that 427 in the green 68 and it wouldnt run as strong as the L78 so he pulled it out and sold it and put the L78 back in.

This is too cool..

There was a great little Italian restaurant in Painesville...  in an old white frame house across from the closed train station.. :)
The last time I was in Willoughby, they had a weekly Cruise in at the local McDonalds...   mostly mid-sixties chevys with hydraulics..  :)

Go on Draglist.com   Look up Evans, His/car's accomplishments will be listed. Ran out of Thompson (cool old track, still very active, like a time capsule)It would be cool to track the Stephenwolf Camaro down. Old drag cars don't die around here, they just change owners. Probably running a Saturday point's program.

Back in the day (before my time) your Dad would have run Thompson and 42(Salem)......Sunday,SUNdaay !!  42 turned into a dump. New owner bulldozed the property and began construction of a new state of the art facility. Hoping next spring to be making passes. Tons of events around here Cook, next summer you need to pack up the girlfriend and one of those Camaro's and head North. The Z may or may not be on the road, we plan on hitting a few Gasser meets with the Anglia. Great time if you never been to one.

I might just do that.  I want to go to the Soild Lifter Show next year if I can plan around it.  Would like to take the Rallye Green L78 to though.  Just need to upgrade the towing rig.  ::)  My mighty ZR2 S10 (with 200K plus) had all it could handle with the trailer and pulling the Z as a roller a few months back.  :o

Hello all, had to register to your forum just for this thread after randomly finding it on google, but I'll definitely be back. My father and I actually run our auto repair shop out of the old glasscock Chevrolet, in fact that's my '73 rs in the google street view! My uncle is also subletting space and restoring/repairing muscle cars in the building too. I'll get some photos of the building and shop later. Might even have some of the projects we have worked on too.
