2014 camaro nationals
« on: June 25, 2014, 02:10:58 PM »
It was a great turn out!!  With the weather iffy all the cars got in and out of the building without issue.  My second trip netted a score of 97.1 or 4855 points out of 5000.  A lot is owed to Bob Harris, Larry Christensen, Brad Mcadam and Jerry Macneish.  They all helped me over this past year to bring the car to this point.  I will post some pictures of the car at the show shortly.  I like the fact that they were very clear on how certain things should be on this car (1969 Z-28 LA car lemans blue)  It seems that all the discussion and research has clarified just how this car came from LA plant in April 1969

Last year I was in the Bowtie class and no lift.  First year Legends cars go on the lift.  If they don't have to recheck anything that needs a lift the following year you don't have to go back on.

As Mike asked, what did the judges decide on the trim rings?

Apparently Scott is still celebrating his gold.. :)     but I know a lot of us are interested in what the judges are doing re the trim rings... and I don't have the bottom line answer either, but what I heard (second or third hand) before we left is that 'the judges are accepting 'both' kinds'...   not sure exactly what this means, other than the judges (as a team) aren't certain what the cars left the factory with.

IMO, this issue needs to be clarified, with photos of each kind (because there's a 3rd kind that is clearly not original - at least to me).  That 3rd kind with the four 'claws', not clips, I *think* may have been what Scott had on his car in 2013.   I think the two kinds they are currently accepting are the 4 clips (on the outer edge of the rings), and the continuous 'finger' type, but it would sure we good if someone who has better information on what the judges determination was ... would speak up with some details and why they are accepting the two kinds right now..?

My personal opinion is that the factory only used the 4-clip (which clips to the outer rim edge) thru 1969 - which I'm confident is what my Z28 came with, and sometime in '70 or later began using the finger style (my '77 MC had the finger style).

I had both types on my car. Four clip on the left side and the fingers on the right side. One judge was laughing about it because he had read the previous posts about this subject. I have not seen my judging sheet yet to see what the official ruling is.

You should get at least 1/2 points on trim rings. LOL.

I Agree 100% with Gary, I'm  convinced the 4 clip outer type were the line installed trim ring in 69, As I posted before on the trim ring post in "Originality" Section.

The question about the rings was asked directly to Jerry and he said they are accepting both.  I got full point credit for the finger style trim rings.  Truth is no one knows for sure what came on the cars.  My opinion is that at one point in 69 both were used.  Again this is my opinion and others have there opinions and that is ok.  If you have 4clip you will be ok too for the nationals as well as the finger style.  Waiting for Shannon to help me post pix lol

Mike, Kudos, Glad you got Full Points for the trim rings !!

This debate about the different style trim ring has been going on for years, and will probably go on.
I personally think the 4 clip style was the assembly line installed trim ring when the Z28 was assembled and the full serration type was a superceded/updated design trim ring. I don't honestly know how #9796696 serrated trim ring could have been used in 1969, that part number never even showed up until the 72-74 GM parts book. BTW 67 Corvette used the same 4 clip trim ring and the GM parts book for Corvette shows the #9796696 trim ring as the superceded number for the 4 clip trim ring.

JMO of Course.

I was going to borrow a couple of trim rings from my sister's 67 Vette but they are such a pain to install correctly I decided to go with what I had.

One thing I did notice in looking at cars judged in previous years, is that some of the standards have changed over time. And that's OK but I would still like to see the standards written down like in the NCRS books. I know that will be a huge undertaking, so I will offer my help in any way to be part of the solution.

I utilized this site frequently when building my car. In an effort to give back a bit to the community I wanted to let those interested know that I received a 7 point deduction (23 of 30 points) for not having the 4 clip style trim rings on my '69 Z/28 at this years Nationals.
