How far into 1970 did GM produce 69 Z/28 YH rally wheels
« on: May 20, 2014, 03:47:33 AM »
Hello all... newbie here and awesome sight !

I've been searching around for a dated set of YH rally (05C build) for my 69 Z restoration.  In searching I discovered a pair with a 1970 date stamp and though they're not my correct dates I did find it interesting and didn't know.

Here's what the stamp read  K 1 0 3 1 0  (VALVE STEM)  YH

I understand how the code is formatted and that the first "0" is the year (1970) and 3 (March)

My questions are ...

1) How long into the 1970 production year did GM stamp these for the 69 production ?
I know it was a long production year for 69 and the 70's model was about a 1/2 year production if I'm correct.  And if that's the case then

2)  Are there '69 Camaros out there with a '70 Vin code?
and..
3)  Was the long production due to any labor management disputes/strikes ?  I know there was a lengthy strike in '72

Thanks for any info and educating me.   :)

1) here is a link that answers your questions about the 70 YH wheels: http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=2870.0
2) there are no 69 camaros with with a 70 vin
3) I know there was a strike in 69 as well I am not sure how much of a part this played specifically on the production of the 69 camaro. I know there was some black and white photos of a 69 with "1970" license plates, obviously they used that body only the one year though.

The long 69 production had more to do with the delay of the 1970 Camaro's roll out. They had a  problem with the dies for the quarter panels ,they were splitting and wrinkling the panels and the engineers had to completely redesign the dies for the "70" camaro.

The long 69 production had more to do with the delay of the 1970 Camaro's roll out.
69 production was extended, and 70 production delayed for both Camaros and Corvettes...   Was there a common issue re parts that caused this? or ????

Ok..I didn't think there were any 69's with a 70 date.   So knowing that, I'm guessing that GM also kept the dates in all their machinery set-ups with a '69 date. Even though they were producing the parts in March and April for the long production.  Would that be correct ?

Thanks for the education guys   :)

No, that is not correct.   '69 model year production ENDED before the end of the 1969 Calendar year, which was still several months beyond normal production rollover.   I am sure that YH wheels produced during the 1970 calendar year have 70 date codes.  My understanding is that those wheels were used on '70 Monte Carlos....?
