Oh yes, Phillip! That was a cool looking dealership!

Another one that bit the dust, dang it!
Don Steves Chevrolet

Thursday, 16 July 2009

Rumors continue to swirl throughout the community about the future of  Don Steves Chevrolet. The Journal interviewed Linda Steves, who along with her husband Tom is doing everything she can to maintain the dealership as a new car dealer. She made the following statement, “We’re selling cars. We still have customers for them. We are a Chevy franchise until October 1, 2010. A lot can happen between now and October 2010. Don Steves will be here past that.”

General Motors is going through a huge transition. The Steves made an appeal of the decision to end their dealership which they received 10 days after the first round of closure letters arrived at dealerships. The corporation, which is currently in bankruptcy, seems to believe only those dealerships located close to a freeway should be left open, ignoring the fact that Don Steves has always ranked in the top five dealerships in its zone which includes L.A. and Orange County.

Steves pointed out the closing of the dealership affects not only La Habra’s revenues but also Whittier’s. Sales tax receipts are credited to the city in which the owner resides. Whittier residents have constituted 60% of the dealership’s new car sales.

As things stand now the dealership will remain an official Chevy dealership until October 2010 able to purchase and sell new Chevys, like the latest Camaro sold last week.

The dealership will continue its General Motors service department, do warranty work and service all GM brands.

The Steves have appealed the closure decision and enlisted the help of Congressional representatives, industry friends, and anyone else they think will help. “We are here to stay,” Linda concluded.

Baldwin, Nickey, & Yenko Dealerhips
Come on, keep the info coming!
Went to Baldwin in 1969 with a friend who was thinking of purchasing a new Baldwin 427 Camaro! The dealership was small and at the time we were both disappointed. He did not buy as he had a little sticker shock and they only had a 427 Nova in the show room to look at. Think it was $6 thousand something. Lot of money back then!
Baldwin Chevrolet

Nickey Chevrolet

Yenko Chevrolet

Take your pick of inventory in behind the dealership!

Chick, I finally found some info and old photos of the Eureka, California dealership (Gustafson Chevrolet) where my 66 SS Chevelle was purchased new in June of 1966. They aren't as cool as yours but its all I can find. :)

Ted Green Chevrolet in Torrance Ca. it is now Martin Chevrolet, My local Chevrolet dealer Less than Five miles from my house. The cars official birth date is 5/6/68, the car is a 05C. and my reistration has always been due on 5/16.
in 1968 05C was from 8-12 to 8-16. Either ordered or sold as soon as it was unloaded. The car has spent it whole life within 25 miles from wher it was produced ( the LA plant is 20 miles up the 405 freeway from Torrance)
So now I need two Ted Green plate frames. I han never heard that name till yesterday, Nothing on Google except for three newspaper sales ads.

I've had the same problem. I know the original dealerships on two of my cars. Gustatson Chevrolet, 7th and D streets, Eureka Ca (No longer in business) and Wilkins Chevrolet, 6970 N Military Hwy, Norfolk Va. (same family owned but now Bay Chevrolet)
I have googled and searched and found very little. A few old newspaper ads and a story about one of the owners that was a former race car driver but other than that no luck. Was hoping to find some old dealer pictures like Chick has but so far nothing. Also continuing to look for memorabilia.
Wilkins Chevrolet: The history of the Norfolk Motor Company begins with its founding back in 1938, started up by Walter Wilkins of the Wilkins family and located at 1500 Monticello Avenue. Wilkins Chevrolet opened for business on Military Hwy. in 1955, followed by the establishment of Bay Chevrolet by Walter Wilkins II, the current owner and President, on February 11, 1981.

My '67 convertible was delivered to Wilkins around May '67.  I too have not found any more information about the dealership beyond what has already been mentioned in this thread.  It seems that Bays Chevrolet has since been turned into Bays used car/service/collision shop.
